Product Description

CD Description

Esbjörn Svensson reaches into the piano, and plucks the strings, searching for the sound of a guitar. He cautiously experiments with percussive accents, and dives into the depths of the orchestral-inspired forms. Attentive to the necessary considerations of musical balance, he integrates electronic elements into his musical vision, creating an optimal mixture of textures. He supplements his ideas with new textures. He supplements his ideas with new harmonic ideas, surprising melodic variations, and catchy motifs. Because his music is the kind of art that doesn't rely on the safety of a particular style, it is all the more effective.

A very well recorded modern Swedish Jazz Trio. If you enjoy Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny ( in his "jazzier" moods) then you should really enjoy this. The title track is a haunting slow tune that once heard will not be forgotten. However unlike some Scandinavian jazz CD's there is also variation in tone and tempo and texture.

Svensson also plays keyboards as well as piano and all the group are credited with percussion. But the keyboards blend brilliantly with the piano and the percussion effects are also not at all gimmicky.

If you have heard and enjoyed the group's "Winter in Venice", you will also love this. I give "Gagarin's Point of view" the edge if only for the quite fantastic title track.

Having listened to a few EST albums now, I was really happy that (just like their others) this album offered something different yet again. The title track is superb and definitely the highlight for me, although it's complimented by tracks of contrasting styles. Another winner from EST, showcasing their musical sensitivity, creativity and versatility.
Highly recommended.

Smooth but funky Nordic sound 16 Nov 2009
By J. TIMMERMAN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'm just becoming familiar with this band, more than a year after the death of the pianist Esbjorg Svensson. It's beautiful stuff, Nordic cool like Jan Garbarek, jazzy like Keith Jarrett, funky like Erik Truffaz - plus a dash of Pat Metheny. Svensson was a virtuoso and his two fellow musicians are right there with him. If you like the ECM-style jazz sound you'll love this.

A few breathes short of taking 24 Feb 2010
By IRate - Published on Amazon.com

3 1/2

Exciting, if slightly-less-than-stellar contemporary trio edginess is a consistently dazzling affair even if occasional formlessness can emerge in all the improvised frenzy and down-tempo alternatives.
