Unfortunatly this single has very little to do with Fields of the Nephilim. For starters only two out of the orginal 5 members where involved in the making of this song. This is also not a finished product. Carl McCoy states in a letter from his fan club that the "new" album may be of intrest to those who are intrested in collecting studio off-cuts. This is almost exactly the same song as "Dead to the world" which was leaked on napster. Therefore it's at least 3 years old!
What about the music then? Well it is a demo and it sounds unpolished and unfinished. Since it's orginaly from a 3 part song it suffers in its own right. Way to short. Carl's vocals reminds more of the Nefilim project than FotN. The music composition seems to be a digital construct and not real time playing.
The live b sides are a joke, they are taken from the Forever Remain video (a london concert in 1988!).
Overall this is a huge dissapointment. I hade expected so much more :(
It must be said that Carl McCoy really is in FINE voice on this single; and the music, although not as intricate and subtle as the old Nephilim, is nontheless hugely powerful. If it was'nt for the repetiveness caused by it being chopped and pasted from the DTTW epic I'd have given it Five Stars.
Lets hope Carl's new CD won't being long in coming!
But, its just not quite there. There are glimpses of a once great band, but they are over too quickly and the track just seems half baked. Towards the end it almost gets going but simply ends. There is the same space-style speech which appeared in Elizium and Carl's voice is the same as ever but the imagination and spark of before seem to have gone.
However, the reason I give it 3 stars is because of the version with the live Love under Will and Laura. These are both just fantastic, they put the new track totally in the shade and just when you feel disappointed that Carl and Tony haven't created anything special, these two tracks come in to remind you just how good they were. I hope they come up with some better stuff for the new album, and keep plugging away. This would be a disappointing farewell.
