Book Description

From a humble beginning in a dirt-poor migrant camp where he picked cotton and fruit with dreams of playing baseball and seeing the world, to being stationed in Thailand as a member of the United States Air Force, to the quiet of the locker room before a big fight, to the center of the cage in the middle of chaos, to the stadiums of Japan, to the arenas of Las Vegas, and ultimately to the lights of Madison Square Garden as the most famous cutman in combat sports ... this is THE LIFE OF STITCH DURAN. The brawl after UFC 38 in London ... Stitch was there. Tito Ortiz and his I just killed Kenny shirt ... Stitch was there. Mike Tyson and Bob Sapp squaring off after Sapp beat Kimo Leopoldo ... Stitch was there. Marvin Eastman's cut ... Stitch was there. The Inoki slap ... Stitch was there. Vodka with Fedor after victory ... Stitch was there. Pride 28 and Wand's big knees ... Stitch was there. Shadow boxing in a Japanese restaurant with Wladimir Klitschko, TUF 1 Finale, Randy's first retirement, Pride Final Conflict Resolution, Diaz/Gomi at Pride 33, GSP/Serra at UFC 69, Gonzaga/Cro Cop at UFC 70, Chuck/Wand at UFC 79, Corey Hill's leg break, and Rocky VI ... yep, Stitch was at every one of them, too. And not only was Stitch there, Stitch had an impact. In the world of combat sports, Stitch has impacted a lot of people, and a lot of fights - all of which can be found in this book, the story of how he made it FROM THE FIELDS TO THE GARDEN: THE LIFE OF STITCH DURAN.

I've had the pleasure to hang out with Stitch a few times - most recently I attended the launch party for his book From the Fields to the Garden: The Life of Stitch Duran, at The Three Sixty Sports Bar in Oberhausen, Germany, on the eve of UFC 122. It was amazing the number of people who came out to meet Stitch and snag a copy of his book. My opinion of Stitch and his book is obviously biased - hence the video review, a clip I took of some fans lucky enough to be at the launch party as well.

Worth mentioning - Stitch's co-author is Zac Robinson, a guy who's made a name for himself recently with a string of successful MMA books. If you like Stitch's book, you should check out these titles as well:

5.0 out of 5 stars Classmate 1 Nov. 2010
By Sardina - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this book for my husband because he grew up with Jacob "Stitch" Duran in Merced California. My husband was truly surprised and very excited to have such a wonderful gift. He has read a good portion of it since I gave it to him and he is completely amazed at how well this book was written as well as how much of his own childhood is in this book. We are truly satisfied with this purchase and for this being the first time ever to order from Amazon we are completely satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Book 8 Nov. 2010
By Dylan H. - Published on Amazon.com

I read this book from cover to cover and could not get enough of it. I really felt like I was there for each event that he talks about. There were numerous nights where I lost sleep just trying to get to the next chapter or finish reading about one event. I really hope there is a second book to continue on with his legacy!

A lot of great MMA stories in this book. I never realized Stitch's impact on the sport before reading this.
5.0 out of 5 stars A true KO 25 July 2011
By William Pulgarin - Published on Amazon.com

I am a glutton for MMA biographies. Usually, when a fighter comes out with a book, I try to read it within the first month. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the bulk of MMA biographies are hastily put together and poorly written. This book was a huge exception!

"From the Fields to the Garden" breaks out of the pitfalls of the standard MMA biography; it delivers a KO to all the other MMA biographies currently circulating on bookshelves. Stitch's stories are unique, and elegantly told with the help of Zac Robinson, the book's co-author. Stitch has a front row seat to all of the most important fights in MMA and boxing, and he spares no detail in this book.

Stitch is truly one of the iconic figures in boxing and MMA. Yet, his story has more to do with the ability of people to break out of their scripted beginnings, and to live a life greater than anything they could have imagined. He brilliantly interweaves this important message into the book, making it truly inspirational.

This book is a must read for any true MMA fan! This is a treasure of a book!
3.0 out of 5 stars Good bloke, wish I could have rated his book higher. 7 July 2014

Being a fan of MMA and seeing a lot of Stitch working his magic around the cage I thought I would give this book a read hoping that there would be some really interesting behind the scenes stories.

The book definitely did not disappoint me, but at the same time when I finished reading it I thought to myself that its one of those books that you could give or take. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was hoping for a little bit more out of it.

Having said that, Stitch seems like one hell of a good guy who has lead a life far more interesting than the average person. It was a quick, easy read and fans of the sport might enjoy it. I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone else though.
