5.0 out of 5 stars An effective roundup 6 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
This compilation would be great for anyone who followed the band during the eighties but who has since lost track of the band or for younger listeners who think of Iron Maiden as a 'classic rock' band from long ago. It is a good roundup of the years 1990-2010, albeit with the Blaze years omitted. This 2 CD set shows that they are still capable of producing excellent music and they have not compromised on any of their hallmarks. The band's sound is still very distinctive: you can tell that it is Maiden straight away and at no point in their career did they sell out to passing trends of the moment like nu-metal or grunge. The band have three top notch guitar players with distinctive styles and they work well together.

Most people will probably know that Bruce left the band in the 1990s but the CD doesn't reflect this (all of Blaze Bayley's tracks on here are live versions featuring Bruce). The featured live versions are excellent but I felt that Blaze probably deserved a track or two, after all, he was their singer for a long spell in the nineties, if only for the sake of completeness. But then Paul Di'anno's vocals were left off 'Somewhere Back in Time,' the previous Iron Maiden compilation- so he is possibly not the only one to feel hard done by.

There is some great metal music here (the tracks recorded after Bruce and Adrian rejoined the band are particularly strong, I feel) although there is nothing new for the hardcore who probably have all the original albums anyway. This album covers 20 years and it is only part of Maiden's career! They are still the guv'nors; its just a shame that there aren't any younger British bands to pass the baton on to sales wise or in terms of global impact.

4.0 out of 5 stars does what it says on the tin..... 8 Jun 2011
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
A thoroughly decent overview of the bands output from 1990 til present, truth be told to be truly representative a triple disc would have been in order.

The track listing is pretty good we'll all have favourites and albums we think less of,I happen to love the 'FEAR OF THE DARK' album and loathe X - FACTOR,but you know what your getting before you purchase.

The packaging is excellent,as ever, the sound quality is great too, value for money at this price and at the end of the day you aint forced to buy

The only niggle, hence a star deducted is the use of live tracks rather than have Blaze studio tracks just like 'Somewhere Back In Time' with Dianno replaced by Brucey live tracks, that a bit naff and unrequired

Still you pay your money you take your choice,a decent place to investigate latter day Maiden if you havent already

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's Blaze? 8 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Right, first thing's first; this is a perfectly good compilation of Maiden's output for the last couple of decades.....OK, there are a couple of tracks I could have done without & some seemingly inexplicable absences, but that is always going to be the case with compilation albums.

My big problem though is that the tracks from the Blaze Bayley fronted releases are represented here only by live versions with Bruce Dickinson singing. Don't get me wrong, I think Bruce is a world class vocalist & hugely better than Blaze, & he does make these songs his own, but surely in a retrospective you really want to hear the original versions.

It's almost as if the band are trying to paint over that period in their history & I think that is sad. Rod Smallwood states in the liner notes that this release is aimed at newer, younger fans who are not familiar with or do not own all the back catalogue. If that is the case, then a few people are in for a shock when they buy Virtual XI or The X Factor & find a very different singer belting out the songs.

All in all, not exactly an essential purchase, but handy to have in the car I guess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - but not essential
As an introduction to Iron Maiden newcomers, this is a very useful release - but to long-term fans, this is only necessary for completists.
