Product Description

Best of album by the British heavy metal band who have had a career spanning over four decades. The album includes studio and live tracks including 'Be Quick Or Be Dead', 'Sign of the Cross' and 'Holy Smoke'.

BBC Review

Although British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden have over 30 years of recording and touring under their belts, their 1980s output remains the most enduring. This double-CD set, showcasing the years 1990-2010, is designed to redress the balance. In keeping with its predecessors, the sixth official Iron Maiden best-of is strictly for the uninitiated. Long-time fans with find nothing new here.

Presenting 23 tracks drawn from the eight Maiden studio albums released since 1990, From Fear to Eternity is aimed primarily at the army of fresh recruits who have flocked to the band during their recent resurgence in popularity, which has made the last decade their most successful yet. Maiden’s most recent studio album, 2010’s The Final Frontier, hit the number one spot in no less than 28 countries, and their visceral stage shows are as compelling as ever. Against such a backdrop, this release is both timely and revealing.

Unlike 2008’s Somewhere Back in Time – The Best of 1980-1989, From Fear to Eternity doesn’t simply re-hash all the obvious hits. The general feeling always seemed to be that a post-80s retrospective was pointless, as the 90s were supposedly something of a creative write-off and the band’s recent albums were, well, recent. But events have moved on and this collection reminds us that not only did Maiden cut the classic album Fear of the Dark during these supposed lean years, the period from 2001 onwards has seen them pen some of the best songs of their entire career. Even the albums featuring frontman Bruce Dickinson’s temporary replacement Blaze Bayley – 95’s The X Factor and 98’s Virtual XI – aren’t ignored.

The influence of progressive rock on Maiden’s sound has been evident from the start, and as the years have gone by their material has become increasingly complex. As a result, the number of straightforward rockers here is surpassed by a wealth of densely-layered mini-epics which have now become the band’s signature style. The rather unlikely UK number one single Bring Your Daughter… to the Slaughter may have lost none of its charm, but in the likes of For the Greater Good of God and When the Wild Wind Blows we’re witnessing a great British band become even greater.

This compilation would be great for anyone who followed the band during the eighties but who has since lost track of the band or for younger listeners who think of Iron Maiden as a 'classic rock' band from long ago. It is a good roundup of the years 1990-2010, albeit with the Blaze years omitted. This 2 CD set shows that they are still capable of producing excellent music and they have not compromised on any of their hallmarks. The band's sound is still very distinctive: you can tell that it is Maiden straight away and at no point in their career did they sell out to passing trends of the moment like nu-metal or grunge. The band have three top notch guitar players with distinctive styles and they work well together.

Most people will probably know that Bruce left the band in the 1990s but the CD doesn't reflect this (all of Blaze Bayley's tracks on here are live versions featuring Bruce). The featured live versions are excellent but I felt that Blaze probably deserved a track or two, after all, he was their singer for a long spell in the nineties, if only for the sake of completeness. But then Paul Di'anno's vocals were left off 'Somewhere Back in Time,' the previous Iron Maiden compilation- so he is possibly not the only one to feel hard done by.

There is some great metal music here (the tracks recorded after Bruce and Adrian rejoined the band are particularly strong, I feel) although there is nothing new for the hardcore who probably have all the original albums anyway. This album covers 20 years and it is only part of Maiden's career! They are still the guv'nors; its just a shame that there aren't any younger British bands to pass the baton on to sales wise or in terms of global impact.

A thoroughly decent overview of the bands output from 1990 til present, truth be told to be truly representative a triple disc would have been in order.

The track listing is pretty good we'll all have favourites and albums we think less of,I happen to love the 'FEAR OF THE DARK' album and loathe X - FACTOR,but you know what your getting before you purchase.

The packaging is excellent,as ever, the sound quality is great too, value for money at this price and at the end of the day you aint forced to buy

The only niggle, hence a star deducted is the use of live tracks rather than have Blaze studio tracks just like 'Somewhere Back In Time' with Dianno replaced by Brucey live tracks, that a bit naff and unrequired

Still you pay your money you take your choice,a decent place to investigate latter day Maiden if you havent already

Right, first thing's first; this is a perfectly good compilation of Maiden's output for the last couple of decades.....OK, there are a couple of tracks I could have done without & some seemingly inexplicable absences, but that is always going to be the case with compilation albums.

My big problem though is that the tracks from the Blaze Bayley fronted releases are represented here only by live versions with Bruce Dickinson singing. Don't get me wrong, I think Bruce is a world class vocalist & hugely better than Blaze, & he does make these songs his own, but surely in a retrospective you really want to hear the original versions.

It's almost as if the band are trying to paint over that period in their history & I think that is sad. Rod Smallwood states in the liner notes that this release is aimed at newer, younger fans who are not familiar with or do not own all the back catalogue. If that is the case, then a few people are in for a shock when they buy Virtual XI or The X Factor & find a very different singer belting out the songs.

All in all, not exactly an essential purchase, but handy to have in the car I guess.

Review.
This is the second 'Best Of album' & features Iron Maiden through 2 decades of music, Please note that while Bruce Dickinson left the band in the mid-nineties & was replaced by singer Blaze Bailey.

Blaze's vocals are not included on this album instead the songs that featured Blazes vocals are instead featured here as live tracks sung by Bruce Dickinson, a similar omission was of Paul Di'anno on the Best Of 1980-89 release.

This album spans 20 years of Iron Maidens career of Metal magnificence with awesomely classic athems, Kick ass Guitar riffs & lead singer Bruce Dickinson gravelly vocals this is British heavy metal at it's very best.

As an extra this album comes free with a free mp3 download which you can download to your I'pod or Kindle Fire.

For Maiden newbies this is a excellent album to purchase as for hardcore Maiden fans chances are you own these tracks on the band's studio albums but would probably still want to purchase this album anyway.
