4.0 out of 5 stars The story behind the story 26 Nov 1998

I picked this out of a "Bargain Books" collection, and it sat at my bedside for over a year. I finally got around to it and loved it!!

The author has retranslated and EXTENSIVELY annotated Verne's original story. You'll learn all sorts of fascinating detail about the history and science of the era. Well worth a few nights of insomnia

5.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't the future wonderful? 8 April 2013
By Robert Bryant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's amazing to contemplate how prescient Verne's novel is, writing about a moon voyage 100 years before the real thing. He got many of the details right, even if his "space cannon" idea was implausible. This new annotated translation restores passages excised from the original English versions, and brings to light what a great writer Verne was. The annotations clarify archaic terms, and add interesting informative tidbits. An excellent read.
