Biography

Nanci Griffith got an early start on her path to performing and songwriting. At the age of 6 she began to write songs, thinking of it as “part of the process of learning how to play guitar.” While she doesn’t remember many of her earliest songs, she does recall that “the first original song my mother commented on…was a song about Timothy Leary.” Then at the ... Product Description

Well, the title is misleading, as this collection showcases only her MCA era; a more accurate designation would be From a Distance: The Best Stuff Nanci Griffith Did After She Left Philo and Before She Went to Elektra, but maybe that's not catchy enough. What is compelling is the music itself. During the period of 1987 to 1991, Griffith wrote some of her best material. She also discovered Julie Gold's classic title song, but found herself floundering commercially in her transition from folkabilly queen to arch chanteuse. Griffith's Philo records are still the most memorable--loose and full of Texas ranginess and sawdust memories. But this compilation is surprisingly satisfying, as it ends just before she began to take herself too seriously. You can hear a tinkling banjo driving "Lone Star State of Mind" and a pedal steel guitar as hillbilly as the Grand Ole Opry on "Ford Econoline." Her little-girl voice modulates to fetching reediness when necessary and even dips into deep Texas in the spoken intros to several live performances. But what stands out is the overall quality of the writing, which turns stunning on the wistful "Gulf Coast Highway" and on "Trouble in the Fields." If the reason for Griffith's status as a cult artist has eluded you, this anthology should go a long way toward clearing up the mystery. --Alanna Nash

Format: Audio CD
Texas born and bred, Nanci Griffith's music combines folk and country roots. Since her first album release in 1978 ("There's a Light beyond these Woods"), Griffith has regularly attracted attention for the emotive quality of her voice and for her songwriting skills.
All the tracks on this album are taken from earlier album releases and thus constitute something of a retrospective. In the main, the CD features examples of her own songwriting, but it also includes a few songs she has covered, notably the title track, which was her major UK hit - beautifully delivered and unforgettable.
Griffith writes with perception about the everyday world and its realities, but what comes across most vividly is her sense of humour and humanity. She tells wonderfully compulsive little stories in her songs - songs of poverty, songs of struggle, songs of hope. You sense from a couple of the live tracks here that she has the ability not only to establish rapport with her audience, but that she can talk to people and understand their feelings, their passions, their hopes and their fears, then translate this into the subject matter of her songs.
Nanci Griffith is a communicator, and, after listening to one CD, you will want to hear more. This is a fine introduction to her writing and to her voice.

"From a distance" is a great introduction to the profound, supurb and excellent work of Nanci Griffith. It gives a tiny taste of Nanci's extensive reportoire. Whilst the album includes great songs from several different albums, there's a whole load more to discover!! If this album captures you hook line and sinker, check out "The Flyer" and "Clock Without Hands" and early stuff like "Poet In My Window"

Who could not like Nancy singing " From a Distance" and "Ford Econoline". The power of her voice and it's musicality makes one feel one is almost there in Country America. This CD is great.

I bought this mainly for From A Distance as I think Nancy's version is by far the best. Lovely mix of stuff and I'm listening to it all constantly. Great voice, great production.

An artist that I have purchased before. A singularily unique style of playing and singing that is attention grabbing. Lyrics at times an equation. Sings with conviction.

You couldn't do any better than this compilation as opposed to the many others as a starting point for this great country singer.

A really good CD compilation of her songs. I have to say I prefer this folk genre to be a live recording with audience interaction and other CD's of Miss Griffith are better versions than this one.
