Book Description

KEY POINTS: * Reverted from Picador. * An author of undisputed world class, now a major Minerva backlist author. * 'Grass is one of the few great writers in Europe today' - Sunday Telegraph. * 'Grass is one of the master fabulists of our age and prehaps its supreme dramatist of metaphor' - Times. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

THE BOOK: Probably the most autobiographical of his novels, From the Diary of a Snail balances the agonising history of the persecuted Danzig Jews with an account of Grass's political campaigning with Willie Brandt. Underlying all is the snail, the central symbol that is both model and a parody of social progress, and a mysterious metaphor for political reform. (19970421) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

An odd masterpiece! 14 May 2008
Format:Hardcover
'From the Diary of a Snail' is an odd book. It combines elements of both novel and political diary, juxterposing the fate of the Jews of Danzig during the Second World War with an account of Grass' own political involvement in the early 1970s. This may sound unpromising, but it is one of those books which really haunts the reader, and its characteristically rambling style enhance a unique literary experience.

Beautiful and compassionate!
