A comprehensive guide which provides a good understanding to the lay man of the progression of the Irish Railways, from 1980 to current day, from CIE to IR.
The main thing I liked here were the beautiful pictures and the sections on the GM powered diesel locomotives which have sadly all but disappeared from our rails to be replaced by the ghastly railcars. Take a look at the cover image to see what I mean. It's highly evocative and provides an insight to what is contained within the book, which is a rather sturdy, large sized hardback.
A popular misconception is that these books are just really for those who like trains. Naturally train lovers will delight in it but its also a piece of history and anyone who has an interest in nature, photography or even the geography of Ireland will find something in here to suit them.
The pictures are well taken and the book is excellently put together. I'd recommend this, even if you may think its pricey at first, it will be a book that you won't just look at once. Its well worth the purchase.
