Product Description

In the beginning, the term "Bossa Nova", simply referred to a new way of playing and singing samba, incorporating some elements from jazz music and with a pronounced softness, both in terms of musical and poetic presentation. Many contemporary critics praised the innovative bossa nova style and hailed it as the single most important event in Brazilian music history. On this CD set we have included songs by some of these pioneers, such as: "Voce E Eu" and "Ciume" by Carlos Lyra, "Lamento Non Morro" and "Samba Triste" by Lucio Alves. Naturally no bossa nova CD should be without the master, João Gilberto and we have showcased among his many tunes, "Discussao", "Doralice", "Trevo De 4 Folhas" and the beautiful "Chega de Saudade" which is arguably the first bossa nova song ever recorded. The bossa nova movement emerged at a time of profound change and modernisation in Brazilian society, bringing with it a deep sense of optimism. People started to have faith and confidence in their own future and this music really is the perfect soundtrack for those times, and after listening to these selections who can blame them.

By A. POLLOCK TOP 500 REVIEWER on 9 May 2014
Personally, whilst I enjoy most of the Sixties music styles and changes, I continue to be drawn to bossa nova which meaning "new trend" fused jazz and samba rhythms wrought by innovative Brazilian instrumentation, together with occasional soft and sensual vocals. Enough, I guess to really set the toes a-tapping with the trend soon finding favour with Sinatra, Doris Day, Eydie Gorme and others in the USA who devoted complete albums to the samba-styled rhythms and songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim and others.

The bossa nova trend continues to cast its spell, with Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and others including the genre on more recent albums. However, this generous fifty-track double-disc recalls the Brazilian originals and if some of the well-known songs sound more raw and less up-front in pre-translation, it’s important to realise they took time to hurdle their way to success from Brazil to Los Angeles and New York recording studios where they were up-dated with English lyrics and the jazz instrumentation of such luminaries as Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Cannonball Adderley and Barney Kessel etc.

The themes of COCOVADO, DESAFINADO, A FELICIDADE, MEDITATION, OUTRA VEZ, SAMBA DE UMA NOTA SO (ONE NOTE SAMBA), DINDI and O PATO (THE DUCK) will be immediately familiar and if some appear more than once on this anthology, it’s because their popularity demanded recordings by many of Brazil’s popular musicians/vocalists. Amongst them, Baden Powell, Sylvia Telles, Sergio Ricardo and Lucio Alves confirm they were top exponents of the genre whilst the better-known Sergio Mendes recreates Cole Porter’s LOVE FOR SALE and Joao Gilberto imports the equally familiar I’M LOOKING OVER A FOUR-LEAF CLOVER for conversion to the catchy rhythms!

Accompanying notes are helpful but there are no recording dates. Nevertheless, this winning anthology is highly recommended for its diversity and great sound.

Early Brazilian bossa nova hits 29 Sept. 2014

"THE CLASSIC BOSSA NOVA SOUND"
(Jasmine, 2014)
. . . .

A concise 2-CD set that reprises many of the classic recordings of the Brazilian bossa nova era, starting out with Joao Gilberto's groundbreaking "Chega De Saudade," and includes several other early Gilberto recordings, as well as tracks by other first generation bossa artists such as Carlos Lyra, Sergio Ricardo and Sylvia Telles, as well as bossa-jazz artists like Ed Maciel, Sergio Mendes and the Tamba Trio and pre-bossa "radio singers" like Lucio Alves, Elizeth Cardoso and Maysa Matarosso who took up the mantle of the new style when bossa swept Brazil in the late 1950s and early '60s. Also included is crooner Agostinho dos Santos, who is perhaps best remembered for his tracks on the "Black Orpheus" soundtrack, and guitarist Baden Powell, who also accompanied many of the era's biggest stars while working as a session musician. The selection is nice, with a number of touchstone performances, as well as cover versions of famous songs... This is a good set, though not completely representative of the era, since several key artists are omitted, most notably composer Tom Jobim (who created the style) and poet Vinicius de Moraes, who was closely associated with its popularization. Nonetheless, this is a strong set of lovely music, perfect for that relaxed day at the beach or maybe a little unwinding at home. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Brazilian Music)
