Product Description

Review

'For anyone whose curriculum dictates that they need to learn what a 6 month old can usually do, or that they need to be able to play with a 12 month old and work out whether the child is developmentally on track, this is the book for them...The third edition is even better than those that came before.' - Archives of Disease in Childhood

'Based on the pioneering work of Mary Sheridan, From Birth to Five Years has become a classic guide to the developmental progress of preschool children. It is widely recognised as an invaluable resource for parents and professionals training or working in health, education and social care.' - Living and Loving

'This updated edition of a classic text from pediatric specialists Sheridan (a researcher for 40-plus years) and the London-based Sharma (pediatrician), and Cockerill (speech and language therapist) is a valuable reference in child development...a practical work suitable for undergraduates interested in child development, early childhood education, communication disorders, or medicine...Highly recommended.' - Choice

Product Description

From Birth to Five Years, based on the pioneering work of Mary Sheridan, has become a classic guide to the developmental progress of pre-school children. It is widely recognised as an invaluable reference for professionals training or working in health, education and social care.

Features of this completely revised edition include:

  • Charts describing key stages in the development of motor, perception, communication, play, independence and social skills, updated in the light of recent research and supported by over 120 illustrations
  • Information on what we know about how children develop.
  • A new section on the development of attention and self-regulation
  • Guidelines for the assessment of children through observation and interaction
  • Advice on when to refer to specialist services

Guidance is offered on ages at which children typically achieve key stages, whilst recognising individual variation in the rate of development and the influence of the child’s environment. Based on an ethos of health promotion and the need for a common assessment framework, the book will be welcomed by all those who work with infants and young children.

Dr Ajay Sharma is a Consultant Community Paediatrician in Southwark, London

Helen Cockerill is a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist, working at the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London.

I bought this book for my other half who is studying for the DCH. He thinks its a great starting point to gain an understanding of the key developmental stages and is an easy reference tool when preparing for any paediatric exam. It is a must have for anyone working with young children.

Not bad 10 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This is really meant as a book for professionals, and not so much for parents. The langauge is more medical than lay, and if you're a Health Visitor its pretty much a must for your literature shelf, it's basic but a good guide to go back to every now and then.
