Product Description

John Williams writes: ''Many years ago in the country south of Melbourne, Australia, I heard a honeyeater sing a song - as one does. The time was memorable because it had a very nice, simple rhythm with very precise musical notes: it was exactly as I put it at the beginning of the first of the four From a Bird pieces and it seemed to ask for a little development. The only other title which has any meaning is Hello Francis, which is a homage to a dear friend and great African musician, Francis Bebey from Cameroon: in this I use one of his favourite rhythms, the makossa. The remainder of the titles are simply my effort to call the pieces something less boring than just numbers - except of course the Irish tunes, which are all traditional and well known.''

This guy can play anything, of course. What's different here is that JW composed everything as well, apart from the dazzling arrangements of Irish tunes at the end, where the solo guitar just sounds like a very good folk group. He's written a couple of great African-flavoured tunes (JW's African music CD, The Magic Box, was my world music album of the decade) and a lovely, wistful track called Song Without Words - though there are another four tunes that are equally sure to get the budding lyricist's juices flowing. Soulful stuff, with flawless playing, natch, but a lot more besides.

John Williams seems to have had enough of a lifetime working for the machine that is the recording industry, churning out more and more recordings of Asturias and Cavatina. He's made a departure form his long-established association with Sony to complete what is clearly a very personal project including his own compositions.

None of the usual Spanish fire on this disc, with a very intimate sound , payed very delicately. Several gems including Song Without Words and Hello Francis, and of course the title From A Bird suite.

The Irish tracks probably work better when he plays them with Richard Harvey in concert (see 'Message to the Future' - John Williams and Richard Harvey's World Tour )but even as guitar solos they are still very fine.

Of course the flawless playing doesn't even need a mention, after all this IS John Williams. But few suspected his ear would be put to use composing these sweet pieces, all of which deserve more attention, and a proper CD distribution deal.
