Book Description

13 Feb 2003
Air Chief Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond and his brother Jack joined the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War. Both were to have a major influence on the development of the RAF in the 1920s and 1930s, in particular Geoffrey who became one of the original pioneers of high speed flight. Extraordinarily, both brothers rose to become Chiefs of the Air Staff in the 1930s. Without Sir Geoffrey Salmond's vision the RAF would almost certainly not had the Spitfire and the result of the Battle of Britain would surely have been very different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stirring Stuff Indeed! 10 April 2007
Format:Hardcover
A serious biography that takes the reader through Major Salmond's RFC run-up to the First World War, through his war years building up a complete RFC/RAF Command in the Middle East and then, his support for the independent aircraft manufacturers and the Schneider Trophy that bore fruit in the shape of the Spitfire. It then highlights his command of the RAF in India and very sadly, his unexpected and very premature death just as he takes over the RAF's top job from his younger brother. This is truly stirring stuff, written beautifully by his second daughter and relates just how the modern RAF was shaped by men of vision and character. If only such men still existed in the upper echelons of the RAF! A wonderful biography that should be compulsory for all RAF officer cadets.
