Product Description

Review

"Frog is an inspired creation - a masterpiece of graphic simplicity." (Guardian)

"This is one of a series of books about Frog; look out also for Frog Finds a Friend, with the same trademark exploration of the emotional highs and lows with which all small children are familiar." (Yvonne Coppard Armadillo Magazine) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Book Description

Max Velthuijs's books always deal with important subjects, and in the way it deals with prejudice, FROG AND THE STRANGER is no exception.

Format: Paperback
Max Velthuijs' charming series of 'Frog' tales deserves wider acclaim; after the brilliant 'Frog in Love' this is the best of the bunch, as guileless Frog befriends a stranger - Rat - and deals with the prejudice and judgemental attitudes of his friends towards the new face. Morally strong without being patronising or 'preachy', Frog and the Stranger is a great book for our narrow-minded times, and another in an imaginitive and well drawn series.

I stumbled on these books by Max Velthuijs by accident in the local library.
They are different to normal childrens books in that they present real conflict in the characters. In this case it deals with prejudice and preconceived assumptions. The prejudice is explicitly dealt with for instance the way pig talks about rats as a dirty and thieving lot.

This type of story telling may not be to everyones taste and could be a shock to children who normally are normally read the run of the mill childrens books. For me this was a breath of fresh air, and more importantly my kids love it.

I purchased this book to read to my Year 2 class during Anti-bullying week based on a friends recommendation. Unfortunately, I didn't order it in time so have put it away ready for an appropriate time. There is a a strong message running through the text and this could lead on to follow up PSHE work.

Really good children's book. I updated my book collection as I had a bunch of grandchildren arrive and this is definitely one of their favourites.
