4.0 out of 5 stars Your chance to contribute to chess theory. 15 Jan 2012
As usual there are 2 versions of the program to choose from; the full one from Chessbase and the generic product from Excalibur publishing.

I'd recommend firstly visiting the Chessbase website, entering the Chessbase shop and selecting the English version of Fritz 13. Just above where it says "System requirements" there is a link to further information including a downloadable PDF manual. It runs to 932 pages and is specifically written for Fritz 13 making it a useful item to keep whichever version you buy.

Fritz 13 will look pretty much the same as its predecessor Fritz 12. It will contain the latest engine and opening book, but if you just want a program to play against it may not be enough to justify the upgrade. It may be helpful to look at Fritz 12 reviews to compare.

The major new feature which might tempt some is called "Let's check". This is a powerful new analysis tool which enables the user to share their own chess analysis with other players throughout the world and to receive other people's analysis back.

Essentially all chess input and output is sent to a massive central database called a cloud; which is managed by Chessbase. To participate you need to connect to the internet through the Fritz 13 program. There are various ways of doing this but the easiest is to click on the big blue arrow by the side of the engine window pane. Also, in the notation window pane there is an extra tab called "live book"; this is where all the best analysis eventually filters into and can be referred to much as in Fritz's own opening book - you can connect here too.

Initially your Fritz 13 engine will begin analysing the game's opening position.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Product and excellent service 6 Mar 2012
I was a little wary of Fritz as I thought the operation may be complex and the computer too strong a player. Whilst the programme can be complex, within 15 minutes I was up and running and playing against it. Very easily you can set this programme to emulate your own playing strength by using a 'friend' mode. The computer plays at your level and increases in strength as you win more or reduces if you lose. Obviously there is a full strength (and many more types) of play where it comes out very strong and aggressive. You can also set it to play passive, aggressive, neutral and much more and there is a good training mode on it.

This is a programme for beginners and more expert club players.

A few words about delivery. I ordered this late on a Sunday evening from Amazon. It was delivered from the third party supplier, London Chess on the Tuesday morning. Excellent!

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought Fritz 13 from Chess & Bridge in London, via Amazon. The CD arrived promptly, though I found it a bit fiddly to set up at first - my fault; I forgot to read the instructions about entering the serial/code number, which is printed inside the CD case. The programme itself is full of features, many of them new to me after owning Fritz 9. The board graphics are great compared to Fritz 9. All round, very pleased. Chess & Bridge even included a free copy of this month's 'Chess' magazine, bless 'em. Happy days!

This version FINALLY works 100% with my DGT board - the drivers and program no problems at all (don't have the USB version). Great program. 100% recommended. Best Fritz so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful full Version (Chessbase edition) 27 Jun 2013
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I updated from Fritz 8! I like Fritz 13 because
I play on the internet (Chessworld.net). I don't use it to help me play. But I use it after. So it's important to me to be able to copy a full game into Fritz 13, set it to analyse the game for blunders. I enjoy looking at the evaluation curve. This indicates the turning point when Fritz thinks an opponent starts to lose> I've had one of my games starting to lose from move 4!
I enjoy hearing Fritz talk to me - the same talk as on Fritz 8. You can link up with ongoing game analysis of a game online. I haven't availed myself of this facility.
I keep my yearly collection of games in a database which I organise according to dates and names of participants.
The programme is easy to use and flexible enough.
The fact that you can put a game on self-analysis means that you can play moves and it will suggest as many as ten variations (could be more, but I haven't tried more, as it becomes cumbersome to look at all these!) that the engine finds.
For the analysis itself, I like this programme very much. A good friend to any chess player.

5.0 out of 5 stars FRITZ 13 19 Dec 2013

This is one of the leading chess software packages for Windows. The voices can be a bit irriitating but can be turned off. There are huge amount of features which I have not been able to grasp yet. Shop around for a good price and you will be happier still. I know that new version is out Fritz 14, which will mean some deals to be had on Fritz 13. For most people the higher level Deep Fritz is too costly. Actually Fritz 8 from around 9 years ago is still very useable, so you can buy and use for many years.
