4.0 out of 5 stars `Two Horrible Books in One', from the `Dynamic Duo' - Terry Deary and Martin Brown, 21 Feb 2007
By A B CeDar - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Standing at the same height as `Mad Miscellany', this book is `Two Horrible Books in One', from the `Dynamic Duo' - Terry Deary and Martin Brown:-
`The Frightful First World War` and `The Woeful Second World War`!

The usual Deary humour flows through the 256 pages packed with facts, written in a variety of fonts and full of black and white illustrations and cartoons, from Martin Brown.

First World War
Split into 5 chapters:-
1914 - The year of the first shot
1915 - The year of total war
1916 - The year of the Somme
1917 - The year of the mud
1918 - The year of exhaustion
with an introduction, a `Test Your Teacher' section
and an epilogue.

Second World War
Split into 7 chapters:-
Terrible timeline
Home horrors
Frightful fighting
Awesome animals
Lousy liars
Chilling for children
The Holocaust
with an introduction and an epilgue.

`23rd August 1939
Shock! Deadly enemies unite! Mr Adolf Hitler of Germany (with a toothbrush moustache) and Mr Josef Stalin of the Soviet Union (with a yard-brush moustache) peacefully agree not to fight one another. No chance. Never trust a man with a moustache.....

1st September 1939
A. Hitler (the liar) had promised not to invade Poland. Today his army invades Poland...... and `peacefully' shares it with the Soviets. No one asked the Poles, of course. Britain and France say they'll fight for Poland's freedom. That means war!............'

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuffez-vous, Monsieur Itlaire!, 9 Sep 2004
By Christian Spriet "Chacklee Chack" (Bruges, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whether frightful or woeful, the two world wars must have been occasions we sadly missed out from our history books. Ladies and gents: forget those nightmarish hystery classes, snap up your copy of this and engross yourself.
Mind you: this IS an instructive survey (a teacher should know), but in to the bargain (£5.99 or less) one get the odds and ends and titbits the self-respecting history book looks down on with condescension.
This is facts seasoned by the naked chefs of history with a pinch of Chaplin's Shoulder Arms and Beany Blackadder.
Wanted things interactive? What about the quizzes, the recipes, the do's and don'ts, not to forget, Martin Brown's tongue-in-cheek cartoons.
Why wait? Forget "vere'ave you'idden ze biddy, Leclerc?", but roll up the barrel and snap up that copy.
And eat your heart out, Duglaz'Aig.
