A US sitcom behemoth with a global brand, Friends shot out of the gate in 1994 with snappy writing and an attractive cast. The exploits of sensitive paleontologist Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), his obsessive-compulsive sister Monica Geller (Courteney Cox); Monica's roommate Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), a spoiled rich girl trying to live on her own; earthy aromatherapist/masseuse Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow); and Monica's neighbours across the hall -- sarcastic Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and his struggling actor roommate Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) became a nationwide obsession, a pop-culture icon (remember "The Rachel" haircut?) and a ratings hit for its entire run.
The first two seasons were mostly centered on the on-off saga of Ross and Rachel, and while their relationship remained a strong presence through romantic rivals and even a baby, the other characters eventually moved from sideshow players into a shared comedic lead. But Friends was not without its heart. Most of the cast had dysfunctional relationships with their parents and went through loss, divorce, marriage, parenthood, and love triangles. The emotional pregnancies of Rachel (by Ross) and Phoebe (surrogate to her half-brother's triplets) won the actresses Emmy Awards, and Joey's tender feelings for Rachel in Season 8 won LeBlanc, the most improved actor in the series, a nomination.
Most sitcoms run out of ideas by the fifth season, but Friends gave itself a refreshing jolt the minute Monica and Chandler wound up in bed together. Their budding romance was not only the one of the funniest arcs of the series, but one of the most sentimental, as they planned a wedding, struggled to have a child and eventually turned to adoption. By seasons seven and onwards, the characters had each "grown up" from young singletons to thirtysomethings finding permanence in their careers and love lives but never losing the laughs.
Friends featured a parade of celebrity guests, but utilised most of the stars as more than mere cameos: The sextet's parents were all brilliantly cast, particularly Kathleen Turner as Chandler's drag-queen father and Teri Garr as Phoebe's dizzy mom. Everyone from George Clooney to Sean Penn to Julia Roberts to Bruce Willis has appeared on the sitcom, and Tom Selleck certainly enjoyed a career resuscitation after his recurring role as Monica's older man.
But no star power ever penetrated the bond between the six stars and their unmatchable chemistry worked for ten seasons. I have owned the single DVDs for each series and collected as I went but decided to splash out on this 15th Anniversary Box Set. I received it yesterday and can honestly say it is money well spent. Not only does it come in a lovely presentation box but there are bundles of extras.
1) All episodes are the extended US versions which means some people who have the single DVD versions won't have this.
2) Each Series box contains 4 single sided DVDs which is a major plus. Previously the series was put on double sided DVDs and the labelling wasn't very clear. Now you get 4 discs per series.
3) In addition to the episodes for each series you get extras on every single disc. I won't describe each one as they are listed on the Amazon product page. However, die hard Friends fans will be pleased to see that you get some great extras such as my favourites which are:-
Gag Reels from series 1-4 and 6-10 (not sure what happened to series 5)
Interactive Trivia game
An hour long behind the scenes documentary
The Friends stars thoughts as the final series comes to a close.
4) You also receive a nice Episode guide book. The book details each episode with a description and pictures. You also get an additional few pages at the back detailing some of the more famous props.
5) The DVDS come with Dutch and English subtitles.
My overall opinion is that this box set is well priced and an absolute must have. The box set isn't too bulky so fits nicely in with other DVDs and also looks particularly nice in its presentation box.
If you are a fan then order yourself one today....you won't regret it!

I must admit that I am a big fan of the show for quite a while and therefore having all episodes neatly packed together already had me satisfied. But the 15th Anniversary Collection box offers way more.
1. The Box:
- it is really compact (~the size of 10 normal dvd cases put together)and doesnt take much space
- nice design (kind of classy and special) with all its content on the back and pictures of the friends in the famous frame (boys only, girls only and all together)
- easy to open (just lift the top)
- the box is of good quality and just perfect the way it is and eventhough I tried I didnt manage to picture a better one
2. The DVDs:
- ten normal sized dvd cases containing 4 dvds per season
- the dvds in the case are hold by two robust plastic retainer kind of things at front and back and quite easy to handle
- the dvds are of a very good quality and each has as cover a picture of one friends cast and dvd number
- each dvd case has a different picture of the whole cast as cover, two pictures of scenes from the show a/o cast in the back and on the inside and a table of the dvd contents (episodes and extras) also on the inside
- to sum it up the dvds are almost as good as stand alone ones; which I liked very much about the whole thing
3. The Booklet:
- the extra booklet is designed very nicely with alot of pictures frome scenes, casts, places and other stuff from the show
- it contains an introduction from the three writers/producers explaining their ideas for the show and characters
- there is a short description for each of the 236 episodes
- like the other stuff so far it is good to handle and of a very good quality

I have the black box edition of this. I was impressed by that but unimpressed by the special features. I bought this for the additional features and am going to sell the Black box edition.
This edition of the Friends Box Set is brilliant. It's the best way of watching Friends. The extra features are brilliant for Friendsaholics.
This isn't much of a review. More me saying that this IS the best Friends box set out there. The Seasons are are inn better cases, single side disks, smaller all season box. In my opinion better box art. Full episodes the ones aired in America. Unseen parts in UK.
If you don't have the 10 season box set and are thinking of getting it. This is the best of the three money will buy you.

You know it all from the other reviews. The extended episodes are here, with all the extras that the other boxset lacked, glad I waited that extra couple of months to buy this boxset instead of the old double-sided disc version. It also comes with nice little booklet which summerises each episode, a rarity in many boxsets. If you liked 30 Rock, Frasier or Everybody Loves Raymond, treat yourself to this bloomin' brilliant boxset!

I previously had a "red box" edition of Friends, but decided to replace the well worn-out discs with this new boxset - and surprisingly it is a HUGE improvement!
1) (the most important) Full versions of all episodes - the pilot seems to be the same (probably it wasn't cut for older boxsets), but starting from the episode #2 you will get at least 2-3 minutes of new material for every episode (and more than 5-6 minutes on some episodes in later seasons!)
It is amazing how many cuts my older boxset had - now I can see a dialogue between two characters and apparently they could cut out 2-3 phrases in the middle (for example the scene of Chandler breaking up with Janice for the first time lost several very funny bits). The final effect that the extended versions in the new boxset flow much better and there are no strange cuts anymore.
2) Commentaries on many episodes from the show creators.
3) Gag reels (except for season 5).
4) Single side discs with 6-7 episodes on each! And in normal plastic boxes, not in paper wrap.
5) Improved navigation - all discs and disc boxes have lists of episodes printed on them (it is an essential feature but my old boxset did not have that!).
6) Episodes split into 10 individual boxes, one per season ("red box" boxset unhelpfully split them into 6 paper packs, one per character).
In the end, I love this edition of "Friends". Good work WB!

I dithered but eventually bought it.
Enjoying 'Friends' even more than I expected. A real value for money purchase. I had intended buying the more expensive boxed set but have no regrets choosing this option.
