Product Description

Three couples. Six friends. This richly comic and insightful novel about the underbelly of marriage and friendship comes from the critically acclaimed, bestselling author of The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy.

From the Hardcover edition.

From the Inside Flap

A richly comic and insightful novel about the underbelly of friendship and marriage from the critically acclaimed bestselling author of The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy.

It's early 2008 and the credit crunch is starting to bite. Sam and Laura Diamond - and their friends - are circling forty and all feeling a lot less certain about life than when they first met in their twenties. Laura wants to work part-time and have a third child - an appalling prospect for her husband Sam, whose secret ambition is to give up his job as a struggling scriptwriter and have a vasectomy.

Life's no more straightforward for wild child turned corporate lawyer Janey Dart. Having finally given up on Patrick, the love of her life, she finds herself unexpectedly pregnant and hastily married to a wealthy hedge fund manager who loathes her friends.

And Sam's oldest friend, trendy restaurant owner Jonathan Sleet, is about to hit the big time with a TV series and cookbook, but can't control his roving eye. So it's no surprise that back on their organic farm in Suffolk, his once glamorous wife Hannah is finding distractions of her own.

Determined to reunite the group, Jonathan brings everyone together for a holiday to celebrate his fortieth birthday. But six friends, two decades of tangled fortunes and a complicated secret from the past make for an explosive week ...

I came to this book after reading and enjoying Slummy Mummy. This book has the same humorous undercurrent, but is deeper and I think has more to offer. It is a skillful observation of how middle-life hits us all - and as such I found it touching, insightful and funny. I'd definitely recommend this to a friend.

couldnt put it down 15 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
this is a great book by an amazing author. written by the same women that brought us the diary of a slummy mummy...i just couldn't put it down. to be honest i had not thought it would be anything but a good read but i was totally blown away by how intrigued i was with the characters life's and history's. the shocks just keep coming but as anyone with a good close circle of friends around them will tell you,its easy just how quickly your life's can be come entagled into one great big roller coaster of a story. took me just two days to read,i was that engrossed, would recommend to anyone who enjoys authors like Celia Athern,Samantha Tucker etc.Friends, Lovers and Other Indiscretions

Careful.. 31 July 2009
By GM12
Format:Hardcover
This is a good book. The problem is the expectations of all those who read and enjoyed the fantastic Slummy Mummy and are looking for more of the same - they're not going to get it. This book is very different, but it is still a good book, beautifully written once again. The themes however are more grown up and almost psychological, a sort of 30 something analysis of adult relationships, misunderstandings, motivations, so the uplifting humour and pace of Slummy Mummy just aren't there. So, if you don't want to read about that sort of thing, then you will be disappointed, approach it more open minded and you may get more out of it. I enjoyed it, but I too would go for Slummy Mummy if I had to choose between them

Good but not great
An easy read with plenty of characters found it interesting in general but the characters were very self-obsessed. Read more

Like most people here I thoroughly enjoyed Slummy Mummy and was excited to discover this book in a charity shop, and was surprised I hadn't heard of it before - now I know why. Read more

Disappointed
Very disappointed with the follow up to Slummy Mummy. Weak characters, flaky plot, all in all a very hard read.

Slow to begin with, took me a while to get into it and the characters. Got better towards the end.

Poor characters, poor plot, poor reader!
Some truly great one-liners but most of the book rambles. Ends in a confused and confusing way without ever living up to the grand denouement hinted at throughout. Read more

Amusing but not as good as Slummy Mummy. I found I was skipping pages as, at times it got a bit tedious.

Oh Dear................
For fans of the fabulous first book I think this one will fall flat - not much of a story - thin characters and I just got bored and gave up. Pity

Easy reading
Having never read Slummy Mummy I has no pre-conceptions about this book. I found it easy to get involved with although agree the plot became a little predictable. Read more
