Product Description

Review

'Not a line is wasted in this book. It is packed with details and sweeping explanations of historical periods and current circumstances. The book is a treasure trove for all those dealing with China. The insights Brown has accumulated during his long engagement with the country are invaluable and set the book aside from loudly advertised books on China—books that are also designed for the general reader but likely to showcase all that has gone wrong, pointing the finger at the bad guys in the Communist Party without attempting to understand policy decisions. The book should be on the shelves of all those who engage with China professionally, and of all who take a private interest in the country.' —Oliver Hensengerth, University of Southampton, in ‘International Affairs’

‘Highly accessible and stimulating and an excellent introduction to one of the great forces of the 20th and 21st centuries.’ —Michael Rank, ‘Asian Affairs’

Review

'Dr Kerry Brown does the business in a brisk, no-nonsense way. For those who want an easy, short and very readable guide to an organisation which has shaped China's present and could help mould the world's future, Brown's book can be warmly recommended.' —Chris Patten, ‘The Independent’

Kerry Brown is to be congratulated in writing this concise and dispassionate history of the Chinese Communist Party. This is no easy task. Writing anything about China in a concise fashion is difficult. Guarding against hyperbole and emotive decriptions is likewise a challenge to anyone who has a close and personal history with China.

Brown's review of the early and middle years of CCP is straightforward. He does not gloss over the terrors, neither does he dwell on them. He places the birth and early development of the CCP in the context of the violent and uncertain world that existed at the time. The way in which Brown addresses the negatives in the CCP story, and doesn't overplay the positives creates a sense of balance to his narrative that sets up his later discussion of the recent history of the party and its future challenges.

This is the strength of the book. By dealing with the history in a balanced way, not giving way to 'horror' or 'worship', he facilitates the consideration of the future that permits the diversity and complexity of the challenges and opportunities that face the CCP to come to the forefront of the discussion. It is a rich and open vein for anyone interested not only in the future of China, but of the world.

In short, Brown is to be congratulated!

Turning Pekingese 13 Jan 2011

A very readable book explaining the power and glory of the one-party system that probably has a few lessons to teach the West, whatever you think of its imperfections. It is but direct democracy under a suitably narrow franchise, I believe.
