Covering similar ground to that of Andrew McLaglen's Shenandoah (1965), but almost a decade before, this gentle, funny, whimsical movie has its fair share of critics. It is often labelled sentimental and syrupy and attacked for, among other things, its misplaced thees and thous, Pat Boone's apparently mawkish rendition of it's title song and the supposed inexcusable violence of its otherwise upstanding Quaker family members!

The film recounts an episode in the lives of a hard working Indiana farmer Jess Birdwell (Gary Cooper) and his stridently God fearing wife, Eliza, (Dorothy McGuire) trying to bring up their family in the early years of the American Civil War. The fact that they are Quakers, and at the same time still prey to the `heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to' adds comedic value as we are gradually introduced to each family member, including Samantha, a cantankerous goose who is a seemingly willing participant in an on-going feud with the family's youngest son, the mischievous Little Jess.

In Shenandoah, James Stewart's Will Anderson tries to disregard the bloodbath occurring all around him until it's rudely brought to his notice by the abduction of his youngest son. Similarly, faced with much the same circumstances, Jess and Eliza Birdwell studiously ignore the sound of the guns of the approaching confederate army until their eldest boy, Josh, whose moral turmoil is depicted to perfection by a tortured Anthony Perkins, defies his mother's admonition and heads off to fight for what he believes is right at the risk of simultaneously destroying any semblance of adherence to the ideals that have formed the basis of that belief.

I think I was a teenager when first seeing this film and I fell in love with it. I had been trying to find it for years and blow me down when finding it on Amazon. It couldn't get here quick enough. Seeing it through the eyes of my adulthood I was a little disappointed in the film but only because I had built it up to such an extent in my mind. The feeling quickly passed though as the story unfolded and the charm and humour of this tale soon had me squirming with pleasure. It is a delightful, feel good, family entertainment and I heartily recommend it to anyone. In this era of political correctness it cannot surely offend anyone.

Loaded with charm, sly humour and, as usual in Wyler, lovely performances. The civil war comes ever closer to a Quaker family. Should the son break with his faith and fight? See it!

One of the best movies made about The War Between the States. It's on an equal footing with "Shenandoah".
The story is about a family of Quaker farmers who refuse to get involved with the war, but do in the end.
Historically perfect as well as being great entertainment.
Buy and enjoy.

Marvellous film, my wife's favourite. I had an old copy on VHS but that has long gone. I've been looking for a Region 2 dvd copy for years, but only ever Region 1 (USA). So in desperation I bought an All Region Toshiba dvd recorder from Amazon and we watch this dvd often. If you copy my approach do make sure your TV will accept the American NTSC format, which in incompatible with the UK PAL.

They really don't make them like this any more!
