Product Description

The 1950s produced two gigantic home-grown musicals in Britain - Salad Days and The Boy Friend. Both dominated the West End for most of the decade and The Boy Friend also triumphed on Broadway before being turned into a film starring Twiggy.

Set in the 1920s The Boy Friend was composer Sandy Wilson's affectionate tribute to a bygone era. Called "A new musical of the 1920s" The Boy Friend is the obvious brother of Rodger's and Hart's The Girl Friend and follows much of the same structure as two by Vincent Youman - No, No, Nanette and Hit the Deck. To illustrate the point we have included as bonus tracks songs from the three shows The Boy Friend pays homage to, all re-mastered from recordings made in the 1920s.

Anne Rogers made her stage debut in this production of The Boy Friend and every track is a gem. The original London cast recording has not been available for a long time and has never been issued on CD until now. All tracks have been re-mastered using the CEDAR system and the 12 page booklet contains many production photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boy Friend 1 May 2008
Format:Audio CD
There had been a number of recordings of the Boy Friend before but I Like this one the most as it is the original London cast with the lovely Anne Rogers plus bonus of selections from The Girl Friend, Hit the Deck, No No Nanette, a must for show tunes fans, and again very good quality sound. Thumps up !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun - The Boy Friend original soundtrack 25 Jan 2012
By Bacchus TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
My first exposure to this musical was when I was 8 and was taken to the cinema to see Ken Russell's film of the musical. I think my parents thought we would enjoy it as much as Oliver! or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I found it excruciatingly bad at the time although I like it a lot more now - I believe now that Russell was sending up the musical to some extent and that most of the audience would have been more familiar with the musical than I was. I have since learned that Sandy Wilson hated the movie. Watching the film again on TV and recalling watching a couple of amateur productions made me want to revisit some of the music and I got hold of this recording of the original production.

The musical is a very slight story of star crossed lovers on the 1920s French Riviera. It is very much a pastiche on 1920s musical theatre but the musical harmonies are much richer. In a way it reminds me of Grease. That show is about the 1950s but the music is a 1970s pastiche of 1950s styles. I think that this gives both shows a timeless appeal. They somehow don't seem as dated as other shows that strove to be more up to date.

The thing that struck me about this particular recording is the sparcity of the musical accompaniment, just piano and drums. I think later productions used bigger theatre orchestras. This somehow gives the impression of an End of the Pier show and probably explains why it continues to get put on by amateur groups today. It's much cheaper to put on than other musicals.

The songs are really catchy. Since playing it a couple of times, I can't get them out of my head.

All I can say is, 'it's great fun'.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1920s in the 1950s... 15 Jan 2013
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Sandy Wilson and The Boyfriend a great show from a very talented composer. This CD brings together the London production along with bonus tracks from earlier performers making this very much a show album to add to your collection. Catchy songs and amusing lyrics are the order of the day and the sound quality is good and vintage. Nice liner notes and another worthy release from Sepia.
