Product Description

Product Description

Younger children are normally puzzled when they encounter other kids who suffer from Down's Syndrome. Here is a heartwarming and reassuring story of how an ordinary little boy comes to understand and befriend a child who has Down's Syndrome. These sensitively written stories encourage preschool-age and early-grades children to explore their feelings, deal with problems that trouble them, and understand others who have problems of their own. Each title speaks to a particular concern that children might encounter in the course of growing up. All books in this series have appealing color illustrations on every page, and are available in both English and Spanish language editions. A short section at the back of each book offers related advice to parents.

Disappointing. The book claims to be sensitively written, but isn't. It mostly explains the fears of a group of "summer campers" on being told that a girl with Down Syndrome is going to join them.

It unnecessarily includes unhelpful stereotype phrases like "We all got a bit scared ... one kid was worried that we might all catch Down syndrome" & emphasises physical differences "Ms.Theresa said that kids with Downs have features that make them look alike. They usually have flat faces and large almond-shaped eyes, short arms and legs, small ears and a small mouth".

It is a pity that such descripions are used in a children's book.

The girls only meet near the end - and find out that they have much in common.

Although the title is recorded as "My Friend Has Down's Syndrome" it is actually written as "My Friend has *Down* Syndrome" on the cover, ie. it is an American book. It talks about a child with Down's Syndrome going on a 'summer camp' - not a concept that is familiar to British children. The child in the book is lucky in that she is able to do lots of things that many children with Down's Syndrome can't do. That aside it is a pleasant book that introduces Down's Syndrome to young readers.
