I bought this the weekend before last at the National Gallery. This book is a wonderful collection of his works. The painting are reproduced in large size and good quality and I found it easy to loose myself in them. Some of the juxtapositions of the paintings together on a page were really striking. However, I can't give the book 5 stars cause I found the text terrible. I admit I can't stand art history and art criticism. I was interested in the biographical details of Fredrich's life but the interpretations I found ruined the paintings somewhat so after a couple chapters I gave up reading in much detail and just skimmed. Still it was a beautiful book at a very reasonable cost and I'm really glad I bought it.

This is a great book about a great artist, ideal for beginners who have come across Friedrich's paintings and want to find out a bit more about the man who created them - and to see more of his work. It has the 3 essentials, information about the paintings, information about the artist, and most important of all - many nice illustrations (including some full page ones).

So I would definitely recommend this book. Whether to gain knowledge about the famous artist or just to look at the wonderful paintings when the moment is right - or both. It is a large book, not the kind of book that you will read on a train, more of a sitting up at the table type of book. What the book loses in practicality it gains in being able to show nice big images which is what we want most - to feel the essence of the works from 'The Painter of Stillness.'

"I must surrender myself to what surrounds me, unite myself with its clouds and rocks, in order to be what I am. I need solitude to communicate with nature."

I gave the full rating to this book is that I was introduced to Friedrich when I was originally in college at the time I could only look at his works on-line so now I have a book on the great artist work I can admire his work much more the striking aspect of Friedrich work if that he simply one of most what the word to describe his work I rather doubt there is word to describe how stunning Friedrich work is and how detailed the works are and guessing it hard to choice a favourite of his Landscapes

I also know that these book are not to everyone taste and the book is more less for those learning the basics of art and of artist well I would be one of them and really why I have the book as I am artist also so all really care about building my influences up and what I do is look at the works and pick up an trick the artist used with Friedrich I did however came to realise that possible that I more close to him working wise as both I and when I look at his work we both very Analytical with our work.
