I bought the SA5 as a replacement for my existing alarm system that has a failed panel.
My requirements were:
- wireless support
- wired support
- easy install and maintenance (no need for an alarm engineer or engineering code
- telephone access to control alarm
- ability to dial in and listen to the house
- telephone warnings sent to me when the alarm is activated
This system met all of those requirements and more.

It DOES support both wired and wireless.
I could not see this fact advertised anywhere and was very pleasantly suprised to find that it has 4 wired zones in addition to the 6 wireless zones. This means I have been able to use all my existing wired sensors as well as adding the additional wireless ones that I wanted for outbuildings, caravan, etc.

Be warned though that for some reason zone 10 is wired backwards. (N/O (Normally Open) as oppossed to N/c (Normally closed)) Friedland support line says that this is for supporting pressure mats but I do not believe them. Pressure mats have not been used for years and the manual even shows this circuit as being N/c. This pretty much renders zone 10 useless and means that you only have 3 wired zones available which is not a big problem as you can connect your existing sensors in series all on one zone if you like. The strange thing is that when I first wired the unit in zone 10 was working as spec'd in the manual. It was only on day 2 that it switched polarity and I had a nightmare fault finding it. I searched the web and found that I am not the only one who has had this issue. So, do not use zone 10 unless you have a pressure mat.

If you are going to wire in your existing sensors and you need more than one sensor per zone then you would be well advised to buy a junction box (a box with some chocolate block in) to make it easier to connect your sensors in series). If you can hide this box behind a wall or in a cupboard that will make it more resistant to tampering.

It supports both a wired bell as well as a wireless bell.

It will work with an existing ansaphone.
This was also a surprise as this does not seem to be advertised. I thought I would have to use the built in ansaphone in order to be able to remotely access the system. But it has a feature where you can ring it up (for 1 ring) hand up and redial and it will answer instantly before your ansaphone kicks in. So I have this feature working alongside my existing ansaphone. Perfect.

An additional feature that I love is the latch key option. This is where you give individual users there own PIN number. You can then set the system up to alert you when a particular user switches the alarm. This is brilliant for giving me the peace of mind that my teenage child has arrived home safely and has not taken advantage and stayed out too late!

A word of advice. Do not enable the jamming detection in the bell (siren). This will make your alarm go off at night when a taxi goes past, a baby listener is being use, the electricity board economy signal is transmitted. I.e. almost guaranteed to happen at 1AM! There is a jamming signal detector built into the panel that works far better and does not cause false alarms.

Friedland support line is (despite the 'cover up about zone 10') extremeley good. They answer the phone almost instantly and are excellent at talking you through resolutions. It is a shame that you need to call them though simply because the manual does not warn you about zone 10 or the jamming detection sensitivity with the bell.

Loses 1 star for inaccurate info in the manual. But gains it back again is it does support wired zones and will work with an ansaphone which was a massive bonus for me.

Works very well indeed and even the kids are operating it with confidence.

I didn't buy from Amazon and needed Friedland advice on technical issues. I have to say that (using e-mail), good simple to understand advice was quick.

However, my main gripe was the fact that every time I armed or disarmed the alarm, the outside unit emitted a loud beep - one for armed or two for disarmed. This would not very popular with the neighbours, so I asked which units had this 'feature' and their response was 'Most of our systems will beep when armed/disarmed but they usually have the facility to switch the beeps of (for example SA1/2/3 & SK1/2/3)'. Remember, this is the OUTSIDE unit - not the internal keypad, which is where most other suppliers have their reaction indications. This unot I got was one opf the cheapest, the WHA1, so I felt confident that the more expensive units would be better - clearly this is not the case. Mine has now gone back for a refund.

Wireless alarm 16 Mar 2011

Far easier to install than a wired alarm I had previously fitted. Instructions were very clear to follow and all units were simple to fit. I supplemented this basic kit with additional PIR's,key fob arm/disarm and another siren. After a month of operation I am very pleased and the system is working well. I've had two false siren soundings, but no full false alarms. I would recommend this system to anybody.
