Book Description

Chick Lit Mystery – Paisley Ray books are not your typical mysteries. A young woman's plan for an art history degree turns into an outrageous series of misadventures in this laugh-out-loud romp about a girl who enrolls in a southern college during the height of the crazy era that was the 1980’s. All of the books in this series cross genres of chick lit, mystery, romance, humor, and action with the possibility of a corpse or two. A keep-you-awake well past your bedtime beach read series.

It’s ’86, the era of Pop Rocks, Jelly shoes, and big hair bands. Rachael O'Brien's freshman plan seems simple: Attend a southern college away from her hometown of Canton, Ohio, earn a degree, party, and meet cute guys—hopefully acing the latter two.

But being threatened by a jealous She-Devil, avoiding the advances of a thirty-something redneck, and discovering an art fraud scheme mess with her “to do” list. On top of her troubles at school, Rachael finds herself forging a new relationship with her emotionally shaken father after Mom abandons the family to pursue a psychic calling.

Bad decision-making, law-bending behavior, and surprise romances make freshman year challenging in Paisley Ray’s DEEP FRIED AND PICKLED quick-witted, south-of-the-Mason-Dixon romp.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Suprising 30 Oct. 2013

Not being a teenager anymore, I found the tales of student friendship a bit hard going at first, but they liven up this story. Behind the facade of student life lies an interesting discovery of fine art fraud. The characters are likeable (or dislikeable depending on who they are) and I actually enjoyed the story. I'm not sure if the descriptions of the deep south language, food etc are accurate, not being American, but still, a good read, light hearted, very funny in places.

Nice funny novel; not serious literature, but who cares? Possibly made better because I went to college in Greensboro...a state school that had a high-rise dorm named Grogan Hall. Some names have been changed to protect....

    just read and enjoy

Really loved this story and have gone on to read all of the others. I agree with previous comments that it was somewhat difficult to relate to the friendships etc, being older than the characters. That being said, it didn't take away from the fact that it was a really enjoyable read, intelligent enough to get you thinking (with regard to the art situations), but light enough that I never struggled to read it, and found it relaxing to delve into in the evenings. Hoping it's not too long until book 7 as I've nearly finished 6, and I'm slightly addicted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Fried, Pickled and a Happy Reader 5 May 2015

I got this book when it was listed as a free book. I am glad I got it. What a lovely read. I have now bought and read all the sequel books so far! I love how Rachel seems to be the only sensible one out of her roommates but she gets herself in so much trouble! If you read this I am sure you will be the same as me and buy the rest! I can't wait for the next one!

I think maybe this book is for young adults to read, but I really enjoyed it and I'm in my fourties. Wasn't sure at first but I got swept up in the story and my interest grew. A fab tale with lovable (and some not so lovable!) characters which you won't forget in a hurry.
