Fried eggs with chopsticks - a review, 7 Nov 2005
This review is from: Fried Eggs With Chopsticks (Paperback)
An enjoyable, light hearted and informative treck around China is what awaits the reader.Having been used to Bill Bryson's highly humerous style of travel writing this doesn't quite live up those lofty standards but what Polly Evans lacks in humour she makes up for with an interesting and detailed look at chinese culture going into the kind of detail that Mr Bryson would gloss over with humour. There is much to enjoy here and also much to cringe at as the author goes to great lengths to explain the hygiene (or lack of it!) and this i guess provides most of the laughs. But that aside this a pleasant, enjoyable and informative read.

Essential reading for anyone going to China, 5 Jan 2006
This review is from: Fried Eggs With Chopsticks (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book tremendously. I picked it up just after my second trip to China, and was delighted to discover that Polly's experiences in China were very similar to my own. China is an enormous country with a unique culture that is hugely different from ours. Independent tourism is not something the chinese are big on, and therefore any attempts to make your own way around the country (especially if you don't speak the lingo!) are fraught with difficulty, but there is also huge potential for fun. Polly has documented the experience of travelling around China with close attention to detail and with good wit and humour throughout. A sense of humour is essential for travelling in China, in order to put up with the constant frustrations. Anybody who is interesting in visiting China should read this book to get an idea of what its really like!!

Like reading someone's holiday journal, 18 Jan 2006
This review is from: Fried Eggs With Chopsticks (Paperback)
I read "Fried egg with chopsticks" while on a train between Kunming and Guilin (Souther China), the very same route she takes in the closing pages of the book. Reading Evans' observations about travelling in China was just like reading someone's travel journal. For one thing, the experiences that strike her the most are the same as will strike any westerner who travels here for some weeks. Secondly, there seems to be more about her and her own troubles and thoughts while travelling than about China. On the one hand this makes the book comforting and easy to read, (as does the good ole' facetious British "wit", oh so missed) but on the other hand it does remain at a superficial level. If you're lucky enough to have a chance to go to China, there's no real need to read this book... it won't provide you with anything you can't learn or observe for yourself. Except that in comparison with her moaning about the public transport you'll start to feel like a bit of a seasoned traveller!
