Men in Black Suits 26 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The Stranglers wearing suits and ties, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, in front of a 18 piece all female string orchestra -can this possibly work. The answer is unquestionably yes.

This is a very enjoyable DVD, with excellent standard of photography, so you really feel like you're at the gig. The music is a nice blend of old classics, and stuff that was new to me. Of the oldies Down in the Sewer is the highlight, with front man Paul doing a very passable rat impression!

The 'newer' stuff includes the excellent Still Life, and Thrown Away, the latter with a strong bass from JJ in the best Stranglers tradition. Sound recording quality is generally difficult to fault.

The string orchestra seems a bit odd at first, and gets a few whistles from the audience, but grows on you after a few viewings.

The unique sound of The Stranglers has endured through the years, not least due to Dave G's superb keyboard skills. Hugh Cornwell was a hard act to follow, but Paul does a great job, in his own lively style.

Let Them Down Easy 3 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
The sleevenotes state that The Stranglers are "probably the most enduring band of the UK punk/new wave era" well this concert DVD will certainly test the endurance of all but the most loyal fans of The Stranglers.
The band appear overwhelmed by the venue and seem to lack the energy required to ignite the crowd. All songs are excellently reproduced albiet with somewhat unfamiliar arrangements that are required to accomodate the `cosmetic' Electra Strings who accompany the band throughout the concert.
The band perform a mixture of songs from all of the stages of thier long career with the more familiar Cornwell era songs getting the most enthusiastic audience reaction.
Having attended many concerts by The Stranglers since June 1977 I now wonder if the band is becoming a shadow of its former self with the energetic music initially produced by The stranglers becoming more pedestrian in the live setting as evidenced by this performance.
In conclusion this is a well compiled concert film showing a band in the live setting in the latter stages of thier career with all songs being well played but lacking the verve and energy displayed at concerts earlier in thier career.

I think this is one of the best Stranglers 'Live' dvd's you will get. The lads are superb. Roberts strutts about the stage like a young Mick Jagger, arrogantly confident with every song. It's hard to believe he replaced Cornwell and is not an original member. I was a bit sceptical when I first saw a punk band playing alongside a 'string orchestra', but the band pull it off brilliantly. My only regret is that I wasn't at the gig myself.

Wow strings! Brilliant concert
An amazing concert which shows a nice mix of mk 1 & 2 songs. Always good live and it shows - a string section was a new twist though (but it worked well). Read more

Richness and maturity vrs raw, fresh and quirky
Enthusiam vrs confidence? Well it isn't the same band as it was when they started. IF they hadn't evolved it would be weird if they did the same stuff and didn't grown up. Read more

A hot Summer's night
The DVD does really well in capturing the concert. Although not quite as good as being there it is still very good. Plus side for me is that even get to see myself in the audience.

Very, Very Safe
I was at this gig, which took place on a warm summers evening at the Albert Hall around 1997. There was quite a build up to it on the band's web site, as it was to celebrate 20... Read more
