Amazon.co.uk Review

If you thought a bigger budget and an A-list producer (Michael Bay) would go to Jason's head, well, forget it. The indestructible villain of so many bottom-of-the-barrel shockers isn't about to change his shtick, and the 2009 Friday the 13th proves it. This, the umpteenth sequel (nope, it's not a remake of the origin story) to the original 1980 movie, gives us a clever prologue that manages to fit an entire Jason Voorhees killing spree in a brisk and bloody 20 minutes. Jumping ahead six weeks, the film introduces a carload of clueless teens headed for a weekend at a lakeside cabin, plus a lone motorcyclist (Jared Padalecki) in search of his missing sister (Amanda Righetti). When the "lakeside" happens to refer to Crystal Lake, of course, there can be only one outcome. Cue the hockey mask, and pass the machete. Bay and director Marcus Nispel, who collaborated on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, are surprisingly indifferent to changing up the formula this time, although there's more care taken in building up a few characters, and for once the comic relief (mostly supplied by Aaron Yoo and Arlen Escarpeta) is pretty funny. You might even regret the slaughter of a couple of these young folk, which is an unusual feeling in Friday-watching. The film's Jason is quite the athletic fellow, and he's assembled an elaborate underground corpse-hiding lair in the vicinity of Crystal Lake. How he's been able to live down there for 30 years (if the film's own timeline is to be believed) and had enough unwitting campers pass by to keep himself entertained is anybody's guess. But if they keep coming, he'll keep slashing. --Robert Horton

Synopsis

After making a bloody splash with his redo of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, director Marcus Nispel tackles another beloved horror franchise with Friday The 13th. Supernatural's Jared Padalecki, Disturbia's Aaron Yoo, and Cloverfield's Odette Yustman star in this remake that finds camp counsellors being picked off one by one. Freddy vs. Jason screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift provide the script, while Michael Bay serves as one of the film's producers.

Yes , awesome !! I have loved friday the 13th movies for years with the earie disturbing atmosphere that put me in a sense of isolation which I think is felt by many in the scenorio . Jason before the third wore a white sheet over his head and ran which , I think was freakier than the later walking stalking , no hurry as I will get their first thing , bordering on supernatural jason . In this you see the start where the original Friday took place with the chick Beheading jason`s Mom . Jason see`s this and starts his revenge . Later sports a white head sheet .
This movie , Jason acquires a hockey mask , and he frigging runs ! A giant runner , more freakier . The kids get there to the remote kill zone , a lack house . This is post initial killing by jason of some hikers . One of the dudes relatives comes looking for information as to where she is . THE killing starts with Jason being more tactical than ever , no walking through doors , no arms through walls etc . The killing of the MEGA hot Bree is a legendary milestone in friday history . Watch and see !!!The film has some gory sequences and a fresh Jason interpretation . A must buy for friday fans !!!!

Now I know I will probably soon get slashed for saying this by hockey-mask wearing Jason afficionadoes, but this was my favourite Friday film having just watched a pre-Halloween trilogy of this and the original Parts II and III (Amazon seem to have problems sourcing the 1980 original on BD at the moment). I found the acting fine for the genre (much better than in Part III, for my money). Unless Travis Van Winkle is really so annoying in the flesh that you are praying for Jason to rip apart said flesh straight after meeting him, then he certainly can act quite well. I found the hapless teenagers for the most part rather amiable (especially Aaron Yoo as Chewie). And as others have commentated this is a formidable Jason, free of the near-camp that accumulated in the long original series towards the end. Even in part II Jason seems far too vulnerable in later scenes. Here he seems a fast, uncompromising killing machine who can't be taken lightly at all.

The plot (with the odd twist that I won't spoil here) certainly seems to have more to it than Part III. It is on the whole a rather neat accumulation of many of the best bits from the early Jason films. It has very little from Part One (therefore in no sense a remake of the 1980 original) other than the recycling of the original ending, which is shown during the opening credits. There is then a sort of prologue with a worryingly small group of victims before the film really gets going with a larger field of targets. This film is in no way less well plotted than Part II (the original from 1980 is admittedly the best plotted of all) and the ending, for me, is no worse than that of most Jason films from Part II onwards.

As a Blu-Ray this is unsurprisingly the best Jason disc to date (but don't overlook Part II!). Sharp pictures with depth, plasticity and great contrasts and colour balance. The sound is also full-blooded in its use of effects and music to match the HD blood of which there is plenty. Not for the squeamish in any version, but on the US release there is a (somewhat) gorier "Killer Cut" as well as the theatrical version. At the time I ordered it was not quite clear if the UK release had both, but it seems that it does after all and I imported needlessly.

Like most remakes this film will mostly be powerless against the nostalgic memories of hard-core fans. As something of a neutral, I found the film hugely enjoyable. I think most criticisms (bad acting, poor plot-craftmanship) levelled at the film apply much more to some of the originals, but they are protected in the minds of fans by feelings of nostalgia. Recommended to horror fans, probably a mixed bag for worshippers at the Voorhees shrine.

This re-imagining, or reboot, of FRIDAY THE 13TH isn't a remake as such - it begins with a short intro showing what happened back in 1980 when Pamela Vorhees went on a killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake to avenge the death of her son Jason, who died whilst the teenagers at the camp were supposed to have been keeping looking after the kids but instead were getting drunk and high and fooling around. This is about as far as it goes with regards to it being a remake. It then jumps forward to 2008 where a group of teenagers head to Crystal Lake to obtain a stash of weed that they have been told is growing in the woods. The group gets lost so makes camp for the night, not knowing that they are only a mile away from Camp Crystal Lake. All of the group run into the machete-wielding Jason then six months later, the brother of one of the group comes to look for her. He bumps into another group who are having a party at a house near the lake and Jason is back once again to hack his way through this latest bunch of unfortunate teens.

I've been a fan of FRIDAY THE 13TH for so many years, some of the films are brilliant (particularly parts 1, 2, 6 and F Vs J) and some awful (parts 4, 5 and JASON GOES TO HELL) and any new additions to the series have always been very welcome to me and this one is surprisingly one of the best yet. For a start, it is back to where it all began at Camp Crystal Lake where Jason calls home. The setting and atmosphere is captured perfectly in comparison to the original, really making it feel like a true part of the series. The killings are as brutal and over the top as ever and special effects are so realistic and gory that I had to turn away on quite a few occasions (especially the tool shed scene!). Jason is more terrifying than ever too, this time he is a lot faster and stronger than in previous entries in the series. The plot's not too bad, it is still fairly thin but for a slasher film, what can you expect really!? The acting is ok, not the best at any level but again is perfect for a slasher film. It's not particularly scary if you watch a lot of horror films but does provide a good amount of jumps and is also quite tense when Jason is in pursuit of his next victim. It still has a fair amount of tonue-in0cheek humour and doesn't take itself all that seriously either, which is good. On the down-side, there are a lot of plot holes but in this kind of film it really doesn't matter all that much. The ending also doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.

It is just another film jumping on the reboot train that is so popular in cinema at the moment, following the lead from HALLOWEEN, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and lots of others but overall this is a very enjoyable film that any fan of the series or the slasher horror genre in general should love. I've watched this on a US import Blu Ray and the crisp sound and sharp picture quality is simply amazing. I definitely recommend this one.

The Worst Remake Ever?
Full of soft porn and some of the worst acting you will ever see. When the best the scriptwriters can come up with is "Your t**s are superb", you know you're in trouble. Dire.
