Chi-chi-chi ha-ha-ha....Jason returns!,
By
This review is from: Friday The 13Th [Blu-ray] [1980] (Blu-ray)
This re-imagining, or reboot, of FRIDAY THE 13TH isn't a remake as such - it begins with a short intro showing what happened back in 1980 when Pamela Vorhees went on a killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake to avenge the death of her son Jason, who died whilst the teenagers at the camp were supposed to have been keeping looking after the kids but instead were getting drunk and high and fooling around. This is about as far as it goes with regards to it being a remake. It then jumps forward to 2008 where a group of teenagers head to Crystal Lake to obtain a stash of weed that they have been told is growing in the woods. The group gets lost so makes camp for the night, not knowing that they are only a mile away from Camp Crystal Lake. All of the group run into the machete-wielding Jason then six months later, the brother of one of the group comes to look for her. He bumps into another group who are having a party at a house near the lake and Jason is back once again to hack his way through this latest bunch of unfortunate teens.I've been a fan of FRIDAY THE 13TH for so many years, some of the films are brilliant (particularly parts 1, 2, 6 and F Vs J) and some awful (parts 4, 5 and JASON GOES TO HELL) and any new additions to the series have always been very welcome to me and this one is surprisingly one of the best yet. For a start, it is back to where it all began at Camp Crystal Lake where Jason calls home. The setting and atmosphere is captured perfectly in comparison to the original, really making it feel like a true part of the series. The killings are as brutal and over the top as ever and special effects are so realistic and gory that I had to turn away on quite a few occasions (especially the tool shed scene!). Jason is more terrifying than ever too, this time he is a lot faster and stronger than in previous entries in the series. The plot's not too bad, it is still fairly thin but for a slasher film, what can you expect really!? The acting is ok, not the best at any level but again is perfect for a slasher film. It's not particularly scary if you watch a lot of horror films but does provide a good amount of jumps and is also quite tense when Jason is in pursuit of his next victim. It still has a fair amount of tonue-in0cheek humour and doesn't take itself all that seriously either, which is good. On the down-side, there are a lot of plot holes but in this kind of film it really doesn't matter all that much. The ending also doesn't make a whole lot of sense either. It is just another film jumping on the reboot train that is so popular in cinema at the moment, following the lead from HALLOWEEN, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and lots of others but overall this is a very enjoyable film that any fan of the series or the slasher horror genre in general should love. I've watched this on a US import Blu Ray and the crisp sound and sharp picture quality is simply amazing. I definitely recommend this one.

My favourite Friday on Blu so far,

This review is from: Friday The 13Th [Blu-ray] [1980] (Blu-ray)
Now I know I will probably soon get slashed for saying this by hockey-mask wearing Jason afficionadoes, but this was my favourite Friday film having just watched a pre-Halloween trilogy of this and the original Parts II and III (Amazon seem to have problems sourcing the 1980 original on BD at the moment). I found the acting fine for the genre (much better than in Part III, for my money). Unless Travis Van Winkle is really so annoying in the flesh that you are praying for Jason to rip apart said flesh straight after meeting him, then he certainly can act quite well. I found the hapless teenagers for the most part rather amiable (especially Aaron Yoo as Chewie). And as others have commentated this is a formidable Jason, free of the near-camp that accumulated in the long original series towards the end. Even in part II Jason seems far too vulnerable in later scenes. Here he seems a fast, uncompromising killing machine who can't be taken lightly at all.The plot (with the odd twist that I won't spoil here) certainly seems to have more to it than Part III. It is on the whole a rather neat accumulation of many of the best bits from the early Jason films. It has very little from Part One (therefore in no sense a remake of the 1980 original) other than the recycling of the original ending, which is shown during the opening credits. There is then a sort of prologue with a worryingly small group of victims before the film really gets going with a larger field of targets. This film is in no way less well plotted than Part II (the original from 1980 is admittedly the best plotted of all) and the ending, for me, is no worse than that of most Jason films from Part II onwards. As a Blu-Ray this is unsurprisingly the best Jason disc to date (but don't overlook Part II!). Sharp pictures with depth, plasticity and great contrasts and colour balance. The sound is also full-blooded in its use of effects and music to match the HD blood of which there is plenty. Not for the squeamish in any version, but on the US release there is a (somewhat) gorier "Killer Cut" as well as the theatrical version. At the time I ordered it was not quite clear if the UK release had both, but it seems that it does after all and I imported needlessly. Like most remakes this film will mostly be powerless against the nostalgic memories of hard-core fans. As something of a neutral, I found the film hugely enjoyable. I think most criticisms (bad acting, poor plot-craftmanship) levelled at the film apply much more to some of the originals, but they are protected in the minds of fans by feelings of nostalgia. Recommended to horror fans, probably a mixed bag for worshippers at the Voorhees shrine.

IT'S NOT LIKE THE 1980 ORIGINAL!!!,

This review is from: Friday The 13Th [Blu-ray] [1980] (Blu-ray)
I am like most people in that all I have read on this film is bad reviews resulting in if you watch you are wasting your own time. With this sort of film you have to remember it will not come close to the classic original back in 1980 and with remake's certain things might be slighly different which they clearly are in this. If you watch this and are expecting it to be frame for frame on the original stay clear on the other hand if you want a good horror slasher movie starring one of the all time legends as in Jason watch it. This is a very watchable film with a group of teenagers staying in cabins at Crystal Lake drinking and having sex, wondering around in the dark with Jason on their coat tails with his crossbow and big knife it's that simple. It may be simple but it works some great killings plenty of jumps and tension some of the blood and gore is full on. With this sort of film don't expect oscar material in the acting or storyline because you will not find it hear the acting at times is terrible and for the story we have all seen it a number of times before. There have been a number of so called remakes but I will stay this is one of the better ones it's well worth a watch if you like your slasher films. On the blu ray side of things pin sharp picture and colour and the sound is very good there are not that many extra's on the disc. Overall a 4 star effort for it being a watchable slasher film with the legend that is Jason Voorhees.
