'This insightful book is well worth reading.' The Psychologist

Product Description

In Freudian Repression, Michael Billig presents an original reformulation of Freud's concept of repression, showing that in his theory of the unconscious he fails to examine how people actually repress shameful thoughts. Drawing on recent insights from discursive psychology, Billig suggests that in learning to speak we also learn what not to say: language is thus both expressive and repressive. He applies this perspective to some of Freud's classic case histories such as 'Dora'and the 'Rat Man' and the great psychologist's own life to show the importance of small words in speech. By focusing on previously overlooked exchanges, even Freud himself can be seen to be repressing. Freudian Repression also offers new insights on the current debate about recovered memories and the ideological background to psychoanalysis which will guarantee its interdisciplinary appeal to psychologists, language theorists, discourse analysts, students of psychoanalysis, literary studies and sociologists.

In response to the previous reviewer it should be pointed out that Billig is at the forefront of the group of psychologies which present a postmodern challenge to the monological position of the currently dominant cognitive approach to psychology. To suggest that Billig is preoccupied with a "cold, bloodless search for the 'truth'" is based on a fundamental failure to understand his rhetorical approach to psychology. Indeed if Billig's work is to be criticised it would be because it neglects concerns with the "truth" (as Ian Parker has suggested in his Critical Realist stance). Indeed, taken as a piece of rhetoric, it is interesting to note the use of "us" by the previous reviewer. It is worth pondering for a moment who is included in this "us", as the call for "us" to be "less serious" has certain implications as regards inclusion/exclusion.
There is a danger of slipping into a hegemonic discourse whenever calls to abandon the search for "truth" are raised, as they invariably mask the priveledging of one voice over another while maintaining an outer facade of "freedom of speech".
Or perhaps it's just me being too serious...?

Billing's insights into Freudian repression is basic, in that it forgets about the wider implication of this theory. Influencing such people as Lacan, Derrida, Levi-Strauss etc. The list genuienly is endless, though this is forgotten (maybe reppressed??) infavor of a much more 'scientific', 'rational', 'logical' evalutaion. This is a problem inherent in most of acdemia within this country, this cold, bloodless search for the 'truth' devastates the idea of humanity. What about 'us', there is nothing more central than 'us', we create 'meanings', 'truths' to find a place for ousrselves in this world. There is no such place, though we have each other, let us not be scared to embrace humanity, less serious, and more focused on each other.
