5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the budding naturalist 24 May 2013
Format:Paperback
I'll admit I bought several copies of this book from the discount bin at one of my local bookshops for Bookcrossing purposes, but decided to read one of them first.

What a great little book for children, especially those who like to explore nature or in whom you are trying to inculcate an interest in, or more perhaps more importantly, a love of nature.

I learned a lot about the insects, crustaceans, arachnids, worms, molluscs, fish and amphibians that live in fresh water. My only issue is that they are species native to north-west Europe, many of which do not exist in Australia. Still, the general knowledge about these types of animals is just as applicable to Australian species, even if the individual species do not exist here.

I understand these books are no longer in print, which is a pity, as they would be great additions to classrooms and libraries throughout NW Europe, particularly the UK.

So my rating of 5 applies if you live in NW Europe, but decrease it to 4 if you don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great out-of-print series 27 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I wrote this review about 'Trees' in the same series; in my opinion it hold true for the whole series.

In my opinion it is little short of a scandal that the Clue series of books from OUP are out of print.

They are simply THE most wonderful resource for primary aged children to use in the identification of a range of British flora and fauna.

As a teacher I used them throughout 30 years of my career, and children and staff loved them. As a parent I bought them for my child, and they are still used by my grandchildren.

If OUP had an ounce (or a gram) of commercial sense, they would revise and reissue them, and extend the series as much as possible. They would be an excellence resource within the National Curriculum for primary science.

Clue published volumes relating to Birds, Flowers, Tracks and Signs, Insects, Trees, Freshwater Animals, and Seashore Animals. There may be more for all I know; if there were and I knew where to find them, I'd buy them!!
