Manufacturer's Description

Who says money can’t buy happiness? For one pointy-eared fellow called Tingle, it is all about currency flow as he attempts to haggle, barter and buy his way to paradise. Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland is a humorous and quirky adventure with innovative touch-screen controls that make it fun to pick up and play.

One day while resting in his house a middle-aged man hears a voice, which leads him to a nearby pool of water. Here Uncle Rupee reveals himself and explains that the pond is a gateway to a paradise called Rupeeland that can only be activated by throwing money into the pool. Uncle Rupee then transforms the player into the mischievous Tingle. Fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise will remember Tingle as a peculiar character from this series who helps Link on his quest but only in return for cold hard cash. Now Zelda fans can finally solve the riddle behind this character and experience Tingle’s story!

Tingle is by no means your typical video game ‘hero’. For a start he does nothing for free, instead only completing tasks and helping people for a fee. As he progresses through the game Tingle must complete sub-quests, explore dungeons and sell maps he draws for Rupees, which he can then feed to the pool in his garden to make a tower grow and give him access to new areas. Rupees collected are shown at the top of the screen and decrease when Tingle is hurt or has to buy something.

Utilising the Nintendo DS touch-screen and stylus, Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland is fun and intuitive to play, whatever your gaming experience. This alternative hero is moved around the screen using either the d-pad or YXAB buttons so both right and left-handed stylus control can be used, while everything else in-game is controlled via the touch screen. Players can interact with characters and items that they encounter by simply tapping them with their stylus. The game’s payment screen is equally intuitive to use with an on-screen numeric keyboard that players must simply tap.

As many a stock-trader will confirm, you must speculate to accumulate and in this game it is no different. On his weird and wonderful journeys Tingle will encounter other characters with items or information he requires, but this all comes at a price. Players must use their best skills to haggle to get the ultimate deal they can on the items they need. Be careful though, if you are too greedy you may end up getting less than you bargained for and could end up losing out in the long run.

Tingle may be dressed like a fairy but unfortunately he has nearly no powers or abilities except a love of collecting money, meaning that hired muscle is needed to help him survive. Parting with his precious funds allows Tingle to hire bodyguards to keep him out of danger as well as aid him with different abilities such as lock-picking and access to impassable areas.

Aside from adventuring, Tingle can utilise his map-making skills to earn himself a supplemental income. When exploring an area players will be able to view the area on their map screen. When they come across points of interest not marked on the chart, they can circle the exact spot using the Nintendo DS stylus and then sell their updated maps in town for a hefty sum.

Product Description

Take a trip into the weird and wonderful world of Tingle as he becomes the hero of his very own adventure! Fans of the Legend of Zelda series will be familiar with the quirky character best known for making maps and hoarding every last Rupee he can get his hands on. And now you can take control of Tingle as he sets off on a wacky quest to collect as much cash as possible and reach a paradise beyond the clouds.

The game reveals that Tingle's obsession with Rupees began after he was called to an abandoned pool near his home by the mysterious Uncle Rupee. Tingle is informed that throwing enough Rupees into the pool will cause a tower to rise from the ground which stretches up to Rupeeland - an otherwise unreachable paradise. And so the adventure begins. Directing Tingle with the +Control Pad or YXAB Buttons, and using the Touch Screen to select items, interact with people you meet and mark key points on the game map, you must help Tingle collect as many Rupees as possible.

Money doesn't come easily though, and you'll have to keep Tingle in the black by battling enemies, exploring dungeons and completing a variety of tasks. You can even raise Rupees by selling the maps you have charted. But be careful - trying to sell your maps at too high a price might make prospective buyers angry and lose you a sale!

Helping you out on your travels are the friendly fairy Pinkle and Tingle's pet dog Barkle. You'll also have to hire bodyguards to protect you from bad guys who want to get their hands on your precious Rupees. Welcome to Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, where money definitely makes the world go round!

Fun:
An engaging little game which gets progressively harder as it goes on. Basically you are trying to reach Rupee land, which is a kind of seventh heaven in Tingle's world.
You do this via a tower which you feed with rupees to make it grow. You get rupees in various ways- collecting items, making recipes- both of which you can sell in town. You can find treasure chests, defeat monsters and steal jewels etc etc.
But beware- everything has a price! You have to buy information from a variety of sources, you have to buy a bodyguard AND pay his wages, you lose rupees as you fight and you have to feed rupees to that infenal tower!
But it is fun! Not too taxing on the old grey matter, but not boring either. There are plenty of side quests if you want a break from the main story and every time you clear a continent, you unlock a fresh one(providing, of course ,that you feed enough rupees to the tower.)
The only negative i can find is that you have to return to tingle's house to save the game, which can become a little tedious, but overall an excellent tongue in cheek rpg and well worth the money.

Rather rosy, really 8 Mar 2008

Fun:
Such was the dislike of Tingle amongst North Americans that Eiji Aonuma decreed that he be removed from any future Zelda games. Which seemed a bit harsh at the time and has backfired quite magnificently with the character being granted his own full blown spin-off.

On the surface it's a bit like a traditional Zelda, and there are dozens of grin-inducing nods and winks to the series throughout, but I found the importance of money (you have to haggle for everything and most characters are motivated by financial gain to the point where they won't even talk unless you pay them) somewhat reminiscent of Animal Crossing, and the ability to make and sell your own items is quite a bit like Harvest Moon.

On top of this there are mini-games, gigantic boss fights, and nifty twists such as the fight mechanics, where you or your bodyguard (you can hire bodyguards to do your dirty-work for you) are drawn into a tom-and-jerry-style dustball which you can tap with the stylus to speed up or pick up other enemies with for a larger reward.

You can't really tell from the screenshots but in person they have a beautiful hand-drawn quality that's full of character. Tingle isn't going to be to everyone's taste, but I found it to be pretty unique and quietly subversive in its depiction of a hyper-capitalist populous. If the Zeldas felt like a Jungian fable about heroism then this feels more like a biting parody of modern life.

And I think that's what the developers were aiming for.

Worth the Rupees 4 April 2011
Fun:
Since his first appearance in Majoras Mask, Americans have shown such hatred towards the character that he was removed from the series altogether, with a few a cameos left in. Tingle however was so popular in Japan that Vanpool created this Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, and I would like to add how lucky we are to have this game in Europe.

The game plays out like a cross between Zelda and Wario ware. The plot tells us about Tingles origins and gives an overview of how his personalty was shaped. The controls are mostly stylus based, except movement which users either the D-pad or buttons. The game play consists of puzzles, a rather basic combat ability involving taping the screen, mini games and haggling, which takes a crucial role throughout the game.

The setting for the game in true Zelda style consists of different environments; caves, forests, mountains etc. The characters are a balance mix of existing characters like stalfos and the Great Deku Tree, new characters are a mix of bizarre, somewhat English looking, people who are only interested in themselves.

In Summary this game is a most have for any Zelda fan, and a great spin off.
