Product Description

Sam is nine years old and in Year 4 at school. Mum and dad tell him they don’t want to live together anymore so Sam has to move to a new house and school. He is so upset that he plays football badly and loses his place in the team. All Sam wants to do is climb into one of the packing cases and wake up when it’s all over. But then he meets his new neighbours and their dog, Muttley...maybe a “Fresh Start” isn’t so bad after all.

First published by Scholastic for “Literacy Time”, the first two stories of Sam and Katie, his new neighbour, have already been enthusiastically received in schools. Two of the stories feature Sam and Katie going back in time to the days of World War 2.

Centred around Emotional Literacy, each chapter is a complete short story, appealing especially to boys and encouraging reading skills and a love of books.

Fresh Start is a sensitively written collection of appealing stories about a child’s experience and feelings towards family breakup. Just the book for PHSE and circle time to promote discussion, it focuses on boys and single dads coming to terms with their new situation and showing how a fresh start can have a positive outcome.

Fresh Start provides both an entertaining and thoughtful learning experience for the whole family.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read for nine year olds 25 Aug 2008
By Lord P
Format:Paperback
This is a sensitively written book about a little boy whose parents are splitting up. The story explores many of the situations he has to face as a result of this schism in his life. An added dimension is time travel, when he visits his great grandmother and finds himself back in the Second World War. I won't give too much away, but the notion of time travel is an ingenious way to look at history within the context of a children's story. I would thoroughly recommend `Fresh Start'. There are interesting line drawings to build up the story, and although each chapter tells a separate tale, they add up to a total picture. I liked Muttley the dog, which added a charming dimension, since Muttley was based on the author's own dog. With its interest in football, this book is aimed at boys the same age as the hero, Sam, who is nine years old. I'm confident that this target age group would very much enjoy this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dad's perspective 13 Oct 2009
By Phoebe
Format:Paperback
Excellent little book, wish I had read this while I was separating. Very often you feel only your own pain and underestimate the anxiety and upset caused for the kids. This book very gently and sensitively recognises some of the uncertainties faced by such children when their world is turned upside down. I only wish there was a similar book for dads heading out on a fresh start!

This is a really engrossing story right from page one, when you wonder what difficulties Sam is having to deal with. Written in a lively yet engaging style, the children found it hard to put this book down as they wondered what adventure Sam would have next.

The author deals sensitively with some of the anxieties children face when their parents divorce, yet also points to the positive changes which can also occur at this time. I'd highly recommend this as an independent or shared read at either school or home, as any child will really benefit from the positive messages found here.
