Product Description

Fink is one of Britain's top downbeat fusion producers. Since signing to N Tone in 1997, the Bristolian has released a series of excellent experimental EPs exploring the darker side of downtempo sounds. On his debut album Fresh Produce he continues to investigate the further reaches of dubbed-out downbeat music. The 10 tracks take in beautiful ambient dub, mellow instrumental hip-hop, broken beats, experimental drum & bass and stoned nocturnal jazz. Warm Rhodes keys and deep-dub bass rub shoulders with freaky vocal samples, beautiful slide guitar and old-school jazz horns. Fink throws everything into the mix, and frequently comes up with future chill-out classics. While the dark and experimental noises of old remain, there's an overwhelming sense of comforting warmth. Fresh Produce is a hazy, horizontal mash-up of late night downtempo sounds. Lie back, crank up the volume and enjoy but whatever you do, don't turn off the lights. --Matt Anniss

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, But Good Nonetheless 25 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
It's true that theres nothing particularly new or innovative on this record. The sound has been done before, generally by Fink's fellow Ninja Tune label mates. But the mellow beats, ambient dub input and a good use of voice sampling amongst others still makes the album a good one, and worth buying if you enjoy the mellow soundscapes of trip hop and abstract hip hop. But artists such as DJ Vadim will always be one step ahead on the creativity front.

Along the same lines as roots manuva but unfortunatly not as good. If it was a choice between 500 copies of this album or 5 copies of "brand new second hand" I'd choose this album but not cos it's a better than average album but cos it's good anough to flog off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Scruff meets an ambient dub excursion in scratchappyland 29 Sep 2000

Definatally an album of two halves. It starts with the sound very much associated with NINJA TUNES. Laid back jazz samples, scratching, amusing samples and nice fat hip hop beats. V.nice. Then after the third track the metamophasis dub wise begins. "Ever since I was a kid..." is an absolute corker of a track which leads brilliantly into his cover of FRANK CHICKENS "we are ninja". The highlight has to be the tracks "Tubb story" (reference to king tubby dub pioneer???) and "phionix dub" which rattle you with nice fat dub basslines and brilliantly built up abstract beats. SUPERB!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Schizophrenic daydream beats 17 Jun 2000
By Jeanne Lightly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Fink may hail from the trip-hop capitol of the world, but the playful mood of Fresh Produce stands in stark contrast to the grim aesthetic favored by Bristol's better-known electronic auteurs. Fink stretches the beats and pushes the groove into muscular electro territory. The results are never short of humor and groove.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh indeed..... 25 Jun 2002

Honestly this is one of my favorite Ninja Tune/NTONE releases. A perfect mix of hip-hop, dub, and jazz...but some how extremely unique. It seems that there is so much generic down-tempo stuff out right now, but Fink is head and shoulders above the rest. It's too bad this album did not get much promotion in the states, I assume it did much better in the UK. Don't sleep...peace,
