Review

Is it the designers, the precuts or all the yummy Moda fabrics that draw us into this book? Oh heck, it s all three! Moda Bake Shop is the blog community set up by Moda to feature recipes for creating wonderful fabric treats from Moda s jelly rolls (2 1/2 strips), layer cakes (10 squares) and other packs of already cut fabs. Precuts have been all the rage since designers started working with fat quarters and are a wonderful way to get a little bit of a lot of different fabrics, usually from a single designer s collection. In this case, the quilts are simple and doable (April in Paris is sooo pretty!), but the shine really comes from the other sewn projects. Just a bit more involved than beginner, Roslyn Mirrington s Jewelry Wallet is so incredibly girly and useful for those of us who travel that our fingers were itching to make it. Jenny Garland s Zippidy Doodle Bag is practically a no-brainer for kid-accompanied outings. (Skeptical? Just think about how many shoes you can try on while

Fresh treats~Fell a little flat 9 Jun 2011
By Amy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My expectations for this book were fairly high. I follow several of the designers and read their blogs. I frequently check out the projects at Moda's Bake Shop. I was expecting all of the projects to be the *best of the best* of what Moda's Bake Shop contributors have to offer. I pre-ordered this book in January. I kept hearing about the book and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It finally arrived in the mail and I immediately flipped through the book, and was a little let down. I was hoping for more fresh, *original* quilt patterns. Granted, I do really like the quilt designed by Rachel G. (psiquilt.com)and also the Wonky Nine-Patch quilt. I will probably make both quilts someday. And, the banner pattern is really fun and sweet. The Rock Garden quilt is okay, but I've seen at least a dozen other similar rail fence patterns. Sadly, the rest of the book was kind of so-so, in my opinion. I don't really enjoy making totes, bags, wallets, and "block holders". (Really? I don't need to spend my time making a block holder.) And, furthermore, some of the projects use Moda Turnovers. I thought Moda was discontinuing Turnovers. Sure, I can cut triangles, but why would Moda include patterns using them if they are no longer carrying them?
On the UP side...the photographs are beautiful, the book is well-organized, there's something for everyone in the book, and it offers projects for all skills levels using pre-cut fabrics. And, the book is very reasonably priced for 16 project patterns. I sometimes pay 10 dollars for one quilt pattern, so this book is a good deal if you are looking for a wide variety of projects.

Charming patterns but I'd prefer more quilts 16 July 2011
By Carol S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a relatively new quilter, and came to the craft via a fascination with "modern quilting." I am a fan of Moda fabrics and think that their precut bundles (called "jelly rolls," "charm packs," "layer cakes" and so on) are brilliant marketing tools as well as practical timesavers for the busy quilter and sewer. So when I saw that a book devoted to Moda precuts was being published, I was very excited.

"Fresh Fabric Treats" contains 16 projects from many quilting designers who will be familiar to those who read popular quilting blogs and those who frequent Moda's free-pattern website (The Moda Bakeshop). Of those projects 7 are quilts, and there are some lovely ones, such as the April in Paris Quilt and the simple but effective Rock Island Quilt. For me, the book was worth purchasing for the quilt patterns alone. The rest of the patterns left me less enthused, because most of them are projects that I am not likely to ever make. A sewn book to hold blocks, a pillow that looks like a stamp, a jewelry wallet -- these just don't interest me. I would have preferred seeing a few more quilts and pillows instead of these smaller projects.

On the whole, the book is lovely. The photography is luscious with lots of adoring photos of the projects and precut bundles. There are lots of detailed instructions and miniprofiles of the individual designers. As noted above, I would have given the book 5 stars if there were more patterns for quilts and pillows, or more smaller projects that I would be interested in making.

contemporary style 9 Jun 2011
By K. Platt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The Moda bakeshop brings you 16 projects from pre-cut fabrics. I loved the cover of this book. Fresh ideas are what we are all looking for and this book delivers. The designs are simple but effective and some are suitable for beginners. I loved the Paris Quilt, the Pack n Go Tote, the Jewelry Wallet, the Summer Sorbet Quilt, Wonky Nine Patch Quilt, the Rock Garden Quilt and the Baby Flag Quilt. It's the bright sunshine colours that are so refreshing - it's contemporary and bright. The supporting material on how to's, finishing and what exactly are the quantities involved in pre-cut bundles is clear and concise. The instructions are easy to follow and there is something for everyone here. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
