Interesting mystery 14 April 2012

Gervase Fen is acting as a consultant to a planned film about Alexander Pope when he bumps into a friend of his - Inspector Humbleby - who is investigating the death of Gloria Scott who had a small part in the same film. Fen is curious as he has a nose for murder and asks if he can accompany Humbleby as he talks to people at the film studios. Then one of the people connected with Gloria Scott drops dead in front of him and Fen is involved in the investigation.

This is an interesting story in the classic mould of British detective fictions. It is well plotted and the characters are believable as is the dialogue. Modern readers may find themselves reaching for a dictionary as the author does use words which are perhaps not in common use today but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the story.

If you want a well plotted mystery which will keep you guessing until almost the end of the story then give Edmund Crispin a try. His books featuring Gervase Fen - Oxford Professor - can be read in any order.

Edmund Crispin wrote some wonderful fey, slightly surreal books about Gervase Fen; this is not one of them. This is a book that starts well and then finishes abruptly with an unexpected and unlikely criminal. Read The Moving Toyshop for a better introduction to Crispin.

A classic detective novel of the sort that we do not get now. So, as one of the other reviewers rightly points out, the denoument seems a little unexpected unless, like the audience of the time it was written, the reader has been carefully tracking the clues. Don't be put off! It's a great story.

Wonderful writing with a lot of humour and great characters. Fen is a great favourite of mine with his entertainingly grumpy approach. It is also a period piece. It reminds us oldies of what life was like just after the war and might inspire/amuse the younger of us.
