Another gem....., 3 Jun 2009

As previous reviewers have alluded to, IQ are one of the most underated bands around. For those in the know it's obvious that they would have been huge if they had arrived just a bit earlier in musical history. That's not to say that this album, or any of their previous excellent offerings, are not relevant today. Make no mistake, this is a beauty! It is a testament to the depth of this album that it took a couple of listens until I really started to appreciate it. It is reminiscent of "Dark Matter" and particularly "Seventh House" despite Martin Orford having departed, with echo's of other artists in there as well. Anyone who has heard Steve Hackett's "Spectral Mornings" will, I am sure agree.... Well worth a listen if you are into Prog or Neo-Prog or just plain well crafted pieces of music played by talented musicians. The DVD which gives a taste of what this magnificent band are like live, is a cracking extra as well!!

I was late to the party, only having heard IQ for the first time last year. What started out as an impulse buy of Subterania pretty quickly lead to a snapping up of as much of the back catalogue as I could afford. IQ have made some of the best neo-prog rock that you could ever wish to hear.
With Frequency, it's arguable that IQ have released their strongest album. The composition and production is superb, letting songs lift and soar gracefully. Songs build from humble beginnings into grand cathedrals of sound that echo through the listener's head long after the CD has stopped spinning. I love this album - For me, each song sits wonderfully alongside it's chums. Nothing feels uncomfortable on this album, and no songs feel like filler. Some have commented that the final track, Closer, is a little commercial, but for me it's a great final track that leads you by the hand through a deceptively simple melody before suddenly opening up into lush symphonic pastures. It leaves you in a great place.

If you are going to mention this album to anybody please do it very quietly. This is a band who have been touring for several decades now and producing tremendous music throughout. the reason I suggest to mention it quietly is I fear that if too many people get to know about his band the bubble might burst and they will be overnight sensations? After their drummer quit and their main song writing influence, keyboard player Martin Orford decided to turn his back on the music business I recieved the album with a definite note of trepidation, could they still be up to the task? would this be a disapointment? would I still crave to see them live? Fear not. From the opening chords of the title track "Frequency" all the way through to the "Closer" the questions previously raised were completely allayed and indeed totally redundant. This yet another belter in the catalgue of IQ, The last album "Dark Matter" was extremely satisfying, as good a total piece of music as you are likely to experience. This offering adds yet again to the superlatives that should have been heaped on this band for many years. Genesis? PAH, Yes? Almost always leaning on previous glories. Do yourself a little favour and spend the extra couple of hard earned pennies on the copy with the extra DVD. This gives an excelent insight to the back cataloge all the way from " Tales from the Lush Attic" all they way up to the latest output. Superb!!! This band do everything from recording and engineering through to distribution and web sites. Give this little part of history a little boost and vote with your hard earned cash, strapped to the "Credit Crunch"? This a complete relief in a jewel case without recreational chemicals.!!!!!!!
