Gary Marchal not only provokes long lost memories, he brings on a laugh a minute with "Frenching Violet". I can think of no other book that brings back memories of leaving childhood only to find oneself in that strange realm of not quite adulthood. Chas has the good nature and spirit of being reared in the Beaver Cleaver Family, but wasn't. He has the misfortune of having a brother who wreaks havoc, a father who is not entirely sure of his place in the family, and a mother who knows everything, but pretends she doesn't. "Frenching Violet" brings us new best friends, old best friends, girls who are strange, yet similar, bullies, funny troubles, and finally, adults who don't live up to the pedestals they are sometimes put upon. Great fun!

a quite funny book, 9 Jan 2004

This is not, I'm pleased to say, a Catcher in the Rye lookalike, though it has a 1960s setting. Gary Marchal is a good writer. By that I mean that he can draw a character, produce convincing dialogue, create a vivid description and turn a humorous phrase with the best of them. It is a funny book, though it's funnier if you're American. It also has its touching moments. It's more than a piece of nostalgia, though once again it's easier to appreciate if you're American. To sum up, it's a coming-of-age novel that will be best appreciated by those whose coming of age is in the past.

I can remember the way Chas felt as a young man growing up and feeling the peer pressure, the hormones kicking in, and all of the uncertainty of that age. What a whirlwind of emotions! You caught all of this with your portrail of Chas's character.
