FRENCHING THE BULLY, the Gits' debut album--and the only one released before the murder of singer Mia Zapata--encapsulates the band's sound and fury in a way that few debuts do. The skeleton of their sound, Steve Moriarty's high-speed drumming, is fleshed out with Matt Dresdner's astonishingly flexible bass and Joe Spleen's scorched-earth guitar heroics. The real star, though, is Zapata's voice. Occasionally ragged and often spine-chilling, but always powerful--comparisons to Janis Joplin are not entirely unwarranted--she belts out lyrics that often deal with the struggle to survive in the face of internal or external hostility.
Standouts include "Another Shot of Whiskey", an extremely catchy slab of vitriol with some very subtle hooks, the swaggering "Slaughter of Bruce", a take on country punk (emphasis on the punk) with adrum break more passionate than skillful, and the pair of "While You're Twisting I'm Still Breathing" and "Cut My Skin it Makes Me Human", both of which display a force of will rarely seen in rock music. The album's masterpiece, though, isthe snarling "Second Skin", a brittle slice of self-analysis strapped to the body of a runaway freight train. FRENCHINGTHE BULLY is an American punk rock classic.
