Book Description

25 May 1972

These eight stories by leading 20th century French writers offer fascinating insights into French life and literature and are accompanied by a parallel English text, making them valuable for both French and English language students.

Among the diverse and entertaining stories in the collection are the wistful masterpiece 'Green Tobacco' by Clair Sainte-Soline; the exuberant tale of 'The Ants' by the post-war king of café society, Boris Vian, and a suspense in the nineteenth-century erotic tradition from Andre de Mandiargues.

5.0 out of 5 stars French Reader 4 May 2009
Format:Paperback
This has been an excellent buy. I have a reasonable grasp of French already and have also completed the three Pimsleur courses. It has helped improve my French vocabulary having the English text available for a check. The stories are interesting in themselves and increase in level as you go through the book.
Not for the beginner but a great aid to improving your French once you have made some progress. I can also recommend the Pimsleur technique for spoken French.

5.0 out of 5 stars An almost essential text 27 Mar 2010
By Sandford TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having given "Parallel Text French 1" a 5-star review, this collection also deserves such a rating. All the stories are approachable and highly readable. First published in 1972, it certainly stands the test of time. My main recommendation would be, that as they are short stories, it is easy to dip in and out of them, which I feel is an essential requirement. As I mention in my review of the first collection, it is extremely easy to locate any phrase or word that is not understood, as the translation is almost mirrored on the other page, again, no mean feat to achieve in translation.

If you are about GCSE Grade B or above in ability, then these stories will both stretch you, but also give you confirmation that studying French is something valuable and lifelong to continue further study. It would be nice to have all of these stories in recorded form, to get that all important feel for intonation, expression and general feel for how the language is spoken.

For the price, this has to be a must-buy

5.0 out of 5 stars AS Level French Students 23 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book for my daughter who is studying AS Level French. She has found it particularly pertinent to her studies and has found the parallel English text very beneficial because if she has been stuck on a particular word or phrase then she doesn't have to start searching through the dictionary or such-like because the translation is right next to what she is reading.

The stories are also of sufficient complexity to be challenging enough, yet are not so overly complex that they are totally beyond her limited comprehension for the level of French that she is at.

I would certainly recommend this book for AS French level or thereabouts.

I like the book overall but it was difficult to start with when trying to match up the English and French text.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the paperback not Kindle version 14 Feb 2014

Great stories but I didn't realise that Kindle only puts the translation at the end of each story which isn't much use. The paperback version has it on the facing page.
