Book Description

9 Jan 2009 Michelin Green Guides
Stop for a moment and inhale the cool mountain air as you hike the Alpine pastures of the Grande Randonnée beneath the high snow plains and peaks above. Feel the mist of spring snow kicked up off-piste at Méribel, or the steam from the hot spring waters of St-Gervais-les-Bains. Follow the scent of olives in the Bouches-du-Rhône, past the oil mills of the Plateau de Valensole, or board the chemin de fer de la Mure to drink in the views of deep blue water at the Gorges du Drac. The Michelin Green Guide is the authority on the French Alps today and the forces of nature and society that have shaped them. Michelin's local writers have walked, skied, driven, visited, slept, shopped and eaten through every tour, piste, sight, hotel, restaurant, boutique, café and venue in this guide. Where they have stepped, you won't put a foot wrong. The Green Guide French Alps is meticulously updated and beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs, scores of Michelin maps, and insider coverage of skiing areas, all-important après ski, shopping, nightlife, accommodations and restaurants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Green guides have got better. 18 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I have bought a number of green guides over the years and have thought them quite dry and stuffy. Useful for museums and churches and the occasional walking or driving tour. This is the first one I have bought in the last 4years so I don't know when they got so much better but this 2009 edition is a revelation.

Still alphabetical in its approach, there are now many more photos and maps and far less focus on giving history lessons (although it is not an area ignored).

The 3 star rating for towns, cities and places of interest and sights is as before but the maps make them easier to find and the descriptions are lively and interesting.

I have a 2003 copy of this guide which at best is worth 3 stars. This edition I recommend without reservation.

Oh, except it is slightly smaller than previous copies so doesn't line up well on your bookshelf!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 29 Sep 2010
By ginann
Format:Paperback
I was disappointed to find that while there is plenty of information, the links between articles are poor, with no page details, the index managed to leave out most of the links I was trying to follow and there were inexplicable loose ends.
For example on page 175,on the area around Briancon, the guide exhorts the reader to 'see above' for information on the town. 'Above' turns out to be 10 pages earlier on page 165. Not easy to follow!
The typical Michelin alphabetical set up is severely compromised by their choice of areas to include under each section. Geographical links are suspect and again the inadequate index let down what could be a great guide to this lovely area of France.
