I travel a lot in France and try not to sound too much like the Grand Tour schoolgirl with accurate but dated and formal french. I am conscious of sounding like a thank-you letter. This bulky book is not one I carry around with me. It is not cutting-edge enough to get me down with the kids in the hood. But picking up a couple of new words and phrases each week prepares me for dropping them in conversations on my travels. Usefully, the book also warns about using phrases I may have heard which may not be appropriate in polite society. A good buy. Better than more recent books which tend to concentrate on rude rather than social.

I live in France and a visiting friend bought this for me. From the moment I opened it, I was enthralled. It's a useful reference but also hysterical just to browse through. I've learned more from it than I care to admit. These are words you won't learn at school or in courses but they are more useful in conversation than anything I learned there. Perhaps it's the company I keep.
For holidays, residence or just to learn a few mucky expressions to shock the locals whilst on holiday I would buy it.
