5.0 out of 5 stars French Made Simple, 16 Sep 2003
By Anthony Webb "Parson Rook" (Now London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With so many text books available for the beginner in French (particulaly those designed for home study) to find a book that structures the subject in an understandable and logical format is worth acquiring, irrespective of the knowledge one is to gain from actually using it. The book is divided, like so many others, into chapters that progress the language from simple vocabulary to complex grammatical rules. Each chapter is again divided, into comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and exercises. The grammar usually forms the theme of the chapter, and the chapter is designed not to teach a few words to be said in the street, but to form a firm foundation to esablish knowledge of formal, fluent French. At every fifth chapter there is a revision chapter going back over the previous areas and words covered in the book. This is the ease established by the book - it promotes revision continuously, adding just a bit more each time to allow the user to make great progress in French. And it is in this respect that the book differs from so many others I have seen. I used this book to teach myself French to a sufficient level to get into a French university to get a three-year degree. It gave me a solid understanding to allow me to generate a fluency of which I am now very proud. The book was so well written and arranged, it actually gave me a better understanding of certain grammatical rules in English, which I had never needed to think about before. I thoroughly reccommend this as a self teaching tool for all those wishing to learn French beyond ordering a sandwich or asking where the ubiquitous post office is.
