Can't go wrong with a Lonely Planet phrase book. Favourite new phrase is "Quelle Salade" - gold dust for surprising the locals.

Whilst I found it entertaining to read to my teen children the various phrases on meeting and bedding people, it was not the most useful phrase book for your average family holiday.
This was a great little pocket sized french phrase book that we used quite a lot during our holiday. Recommended for beginners. Some of the annunciation was over the top, but overall a big help
