I picked up the Kindle free version and believe me I throughly enjoy it! The passion, the joys, the pains, the fights, well it covers all the possible adventures of having a harem! The book have lasted in print for more than 120 years because it is a great book. The book is an example of Victorian Literature, very polite, well written and everything disguised with a French aristocratic flair.

Sexist Fantasies in France would be a more modern title, as that pretty much sums it up. Clearly I erred in thinking this was some kind of treatise on harems, which would be interesting. Rather, I fell into the daydreams and musings of a young man who inherits a fantastic amount of money, the privilege and association that accompanies that, and a harem of sorts that he manages to screw up by modernizing the women. it has interesting psychological insights into both men and women, and clearly shows how women of means are substantially freer than those trapped by lack of means to a life of servitude - even if that just means marriage. The descriptions of the times and place were worth the read, as well as the sociological insights into the culture at that time.
