This must be as close to the great tradition of the French organist/composers as you can get. Works by some of the past masters and a couple by one of the present masters who is also the performer played on one of the great Parisian instruments (The Trinite) made famous by Olivier Messiaen possibly the greatest of them all.

One of the EMI Debut series the disc runs for some 74minutes. The booklet includes brief notes on the music, the performer, the church and the organ including a specification.

From the opening flourish of the Franck third choral you realise here is a master at work. At a tempo perfectly paced to hear all the notes the composers registrations are followed to the letter. There is also the reedy trumpet like sound that is specified for the lyrical central section and a great build up to the final page where the mutations and mixtures added by Messiaen may take the sound away from the tonal ethos of Cavaille-Coll but the final chords still do not sound top heavy like on some British instruments. This is followed by the pastoral like Cantabile again played with great insight and highlighting of inner detail so often lost.

Two pieces by Vierne the fiery Carillon de Westminster and Evening Star from the Pieces de Fantasie. Again the rock steady tempi and accuracy of the note playing astound, so does the thrilling sound in the carillon. The other piece is all calm and stillness. Langlais thunderous Te Deum conjures up images of a great incense laden cathedral while Ave Maria/ave Maris Stella is more subdued with echoes of chant.

Naji Hakim has great shoes to fill following Messiaen in this position at the Trinite in Paris and he pays the master great tribute with a simply outstanding performance of Dieu Parmi Nous.

Naji Hakim Pipe Organ CD Worth Obtaining 21 Aug. 2014
By Jim - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This recording of Naji Hakim's musical offerings played on the organ of Sainte Trinite in Paris, where he was Titularie when this was made, is well worth obtaining. The organ itself, like many others in France, is a product of the celebrated builder Aristide Cavaille-Coll, and for better or worse has had a number of tonal additions and changes made to it over the years since it was installed in 1886. For this recording as he has for others Hakim begins with traditional organ concert favorites, here by Cesar Franck and Louis Vierne. Unfortunately in my opinion he includes Vierne's too often played Carillon de Westminster, when Vierne composed much more interesting bells pieces such as Les Cloches de Hincklley, included as is the Westminster offering in Vierne's 24 Pieces de Fantaisie. Following those, Hakim ventures into the realm of more contemporary and often less heard works by Jean Langlais, Olivier Messiaen, and Hakim himself, which for me are much more interesting. Hakim as usual plays superbly, using the organ's resources interestingly. Recommended, especially for the more modern offerings.
