This is a recital to savour; Von Stade's voice was at its freshest but she was already an experienced singer and particularly at ease with the French language, having already lived in France and learned fluent French over some years. There is a special plangency and beauty to her tone and those excursions into her lower register are heart-stopping. Other reviewers remark upon a certain lack of depth in her interpretation of the text; I do not share these reservations and, in any case, the musciality, ease of production and clarity of enunciation carry the day for me. It is such a lovely, mellow, mezzo voice that one can listen to the whole recital without tiring of it, whereas sometimes over an hour of singing a soprano can become too glaring on the ear. "Flicka" is so much at home in the material and her joy in singing it is vividly communicated to the listener. The opening Berlioz aria is particularly successful and sampling that should win over any doubters. No wonder she is so beloved a singer, especially in the US - everybody's favourite mezzo in some repertoire.

This is a standout collection of beautiful arias delivered with deep passion and elegance. Von Stade has given us a really lovely sample of her rich smooth voice. As to the nuance of her technique, my opinion is that taken as a whole, this album is wonderful, really wonderful. I listen to it very frequently, love it, and do not tire of it.

Everytime I listen to radio culture it's Wagner, Verdi and Puccini. This choice of French repertoire is intelligent an Federica range is apropriate to the arias. Offenbach's "Dites Lui..." from "La granduchesse de Gerolstein" is a gem.

I have always loved the soprano voice and Natalie Dessay has been my number one favourite for many years. Here she does not disappoint. This CD which now dates back almost 10 years has her singing in her home tongue a wonderful selection of arias, some less familiar than others. The voice, as always, is beautiful, sounding young and fresh and supple, her coloratura as breathtaking as ever. Highly recommended.

This collection of French arias is a delight from beginning to end. Miss Dessay's crystal-clear voice soars and swoops apparently effortlessly in each number. If you wish for over an hour of undiluted pleasure, you won't go wrong by listening to this.
