The book and cassete provides a comprehensive first introduction to the french language by teaching you to construct grammatically correct french. It has a very structured approach and tries to explain the intricacies of sentence construction to make sure you have a good grasp of the language. Explanations are rife all through the course with useful tips for quickly understanding how the language works. I bought the course with no prior knowledge of French whatsover and I was very impressed with the teaching method. It is as good as enrolling in a French taught course with the additional advantage of allowing you to proceed at your own pace. Therefore giving you all the time you need to learn. If your idea of learning the language is to race through the book, you will find that you will not gain the full benefit of the course. The first chapters are easy and you can go through them quite quickly but I have found that in later chapters, you need to slow down and take extra time to learn it properly before proceeding to the next chapters. Learning a language takes time and patience and of course lots of practice. Completing the exercises in each section is a good idea because it gives you the chance to test your understanding and correct your mistakes. In addition, if you take the advice of the authors and continue your learning experience by listening to French programs and reading books, you will find that this course is more than adequate to teach you to speak and understand the french language.

This was not at all what I needed to learn french from scratch.

This book/tape is an excellent review of the language, especially the grammar for those that need a review. However I was new to french, and found that this course went way to fast for a beginner, and went into detail that I would never use (e.g. subjunctive tenses), even though I am now conversant in French (thanks to other methods).

This course is a good review of grammar, but did not teach me to speak the language. However, it was such a comprehensive review that I went out and bought the German version (without the tapes) to review all of the german I had learned many years ago in school. For this type of purpose it works quite well, but it is not well suited for those with no exposure to the language.
