An all boys public school, Melbury for Boys, is thrown into lustful wanting when their French tutor (Agnes Laurent) turns out to be gorgeous, sexy and female.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Flush on the heels of their success with the comedy I'm All Right Jack, the twin Boulting brothers (Roy, director and John producer) released this standard comedic fare with a dash of spice. Set in the traditional British boys' school, the farce deals with the reactions of the young lads and their profs when Mlle. Madeleine Lafarge (Agnes Laurent), a gorgeous new French language teacher, shows up to start work. Along with the incidents that evolve out of countless crushes on the charming, sexy woman is a school full of great characters -- from the cook to the posturing school master, and the young lover to the insufferable colonel who heads up the board of governors, all adding interest and zest to the goings-on. ...A French Mistress

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Pleasure 7 Feb 2011
By A. W. Wilson TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
5 stars purely for the sheer pleasure and fun of watching truly great British character actors at their best. I refer of course to the irreplacable Cecil Parker, James R.Justice, Raymond Huntley, Thorley Walters, Kenneth Friffith, Irene Handl and Athene Seyler. Add to that the so old fashioned, but beautifully innocent plot, the truly gorgeous "Mlle Agnes Laurent" (as she is billed), mint print and sound, and a length of 94', a bottle of wine (and a huge enjoyment of nostalia) and you have the recipe for enjoying a forgotten wonderul piece of British and Boulting Bros filmmaking. (The wine doesn't come with the film sadly but it's still tremendous value for money).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film 10 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Good storyline, and very watchable even today eve though it is very dated. Lots of great actors from the late 1950s/60s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh, la, la! 19 Oct 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is quite a cheeky and, for its time (1960) racy - but, by no means, smutty - film depicting the almost inevitable events and the emotional effects on the pupils and staff of an English all-boys public school, following the appointment of a young, attractive female French teacher. This results from several previous masters having, in turn, left the school by ambulance, apparently suffering from food poisoning. Being the only applicant for the position, mademoiselle's appointment was rather forced on the headmaster, much to the delight of his sports teacher son and, quite quickly, the pupils in general but not, of course, the more "staid" members of staff.
To some extent, this did put me in mind, albeit vaguely and perhaps a little harshly, of a male version of some of the St. Trinian's films, but without so much violence, although the school does ultimately suffer an attack at the hands of the pupils as a protest at the eventual dismissal of the French teacher. This follows the headmaster's assumption that his own embarrassing pre-war indiscretions have some connection with her and are about to catch up with him and cause complications.
By to-day's standards, this film is somewhat tame but, nevertheless, refreshingly light hearted and enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ah Mon Dieu! 21 Sep 2012

A French Mistress (Roy Bolting, 1961, 98')

In a series on early Brigitte Bardot movies (my reviews 164us Vadim creates BB, 167fr Pré-Vadim BB and 168us BB a French Icoon, I ran into this title: Another unbelievable document of the naïve-naughty olala French attraction to Albion - if in any doubt about the term, look it up under Wikipedia disambiguation. In that day and age?

Cast (in credits order) Cecil Parker ... John Crane MA Headmaster of Melbury School, James Robertson Justice ... Robert Martin / 'Bow Wow', Ian Bannen ... Colin Crane, The Headmaster's Son, Agnès Laurent ... Madeleine Lafarge - The French Mistress, Raymond Huntley ... Rev Edwin Peake, Irene Handl ... Staff Sgt Hodges, Edith Sharpe ... Matron

>>>The boys of Melbury Primary School are plunged into turmoil when the new French Master turns out to be a Mistress! Madelin Leforge's (the French Mistress) effect on the boys is swift and amazing. Suddenly everyone wants extra French Lessons just to glimpse the teacher in revealing shorts and bikinis. As discipline crumbles, a scandal explodes when the Head discovers the mademoiselle's mother was an old flame. Madeline must be dismissed to save further embarrassments. But the boys take strike action to stop this from happening in a breezy comedy with plenty of ooh la la! >>> Written by Jenny Evans <> for IMDb

One plus: <<<James Robertson Justice was always a noticeable presence in a film with his large stature, bushy beard and booming voice. A PhD, a journalist, a naturalist, an expert falconer, a racing car driver, JRJ was certainly a man of many talents.

He entered the film industry quite late in life (37) after he was spotted serving as MC for a local music hall.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slim Lady slim plot 31 July 2011
By Neilc
A young, pretty Frenchwoman comes to teach French at a boys' boarding school where everyone is expecting her to be an old, ugly Frenchwoman. At the sight of her the boys' attitude changes instantly from revulsion to enthusiasm. Throw in minor romance and a couple of minor hiccups and the whole thing is done. The film was made in the late 50's early 60's. The film, the plot, the direction, the acting and the pace can best be described in one word - lazy.
