I was dreadful at French at school -- never even got an o level in it (this was in the seventies) so approached this with some trepidation.
It's actually very easy. you just pop the cds in and listen, practising when you can. although he starts you off with very easy English words said in a French accent (though no 'elderberries') he does progress to actual French and sentence structure, encouraging you to repeat often.
You won't be fluent by any means but you'll (probably) be able to make yourself understood.
Highly recommended, and although I received a review copy I would happily buy this method for another language.

I did an "O" grade in French around thirty years ago but beyond the ability to recognise some words I usually end up playing the stupid foreigner whenever I'm in France....relying on the natives to translate for me. Anyway I thought I'd give this a go and see if it might improve my chances of successfully ordering a pain au chocolat next time I find myself in the boulangerie. While it was remarkably effortless I've come to the end now and don't find myself feverishly reaching for the passport to put my new skills to the test. Certainly I know a lot more than I did at the start but I couldn't help but feel that the course was cherry-picking the easy stuff (it kicks off on all those words that are virtually identical to the English). Still....as long as you don't go into it expecting to be exchanging bon mots like a born and bred Breton it's a pretty reasonable return on the investment of 12 hours of your time.

Perfect French by Michel Thomas, this set of c.ds takes you up a level.I got the total French first. The continuation is smooth, this one also uses two students but not the same ones.I find listening is easier for me as I'm dyslexic.The usual high standard of these c,ds is encouraging and his handy tips for remembering tenses is invaluable.
